  1. I have just picked up a catalogue for Field & Trek - all shiny new products
    and glossy pictures.

However, as one who is approaching 60 but still keen on walking etc, I am
very aware that all the pics that feature people wearing clothing etc.
    depict youngsters.

All catalogues - Cotswold etc. - are the same. Why are older people NOT
represented. We have just as much spending power as the kids.

Because it works better with 'young n beautiful people' in the pictures.
As a whole, people react more positively towards young attractive people
wearing / using the kit and hence spend more.

I think F&T (could have been Cotswold though) did use an older, more
rugged, bloke in a recent catalogue.

You could equally say it they were sizeist due to the lack of larger
framed models or perhaps even racist too as I have rarely seen other
than white models in the catalogues.

Yes, for several years F&T have used an older model - he was in the
catalogue earlier this year and still appears online. E.g. see:

Racist! Give us a break. Not so. I very rarely see any "ethnic minority"
folk hillwalking. So probably there aren't that many out there with an
interest. So why use non-caucasian models? :-00000000

That's more like the age of the people we meet walking when out in the
Surrey Hills and even on Exmoor, very few "youngsters".

I didn't mean to imply that they are racist but tried to say that some
folk might think they were due to the absence of ethnic models.

Your point about the lack of ethnic minorities in hillwalking is a fair
one that I would agree with. A punter with little outdoor pursuits
experience wandering into one of the big retailers in a town and picking
up the catalogue might see it differently and all the big outdoor
pursuits chains do get a sizeable portion of their trade from ordinary
folk wanting a waterproof jacket etc.

If the age issue if that is thought to be valid the fact that a large
proportion of hillwalkers are of a rounder shape does beg the question
    of size...

Personally I would prefer it if the models were real climbers / walkers
actually using the kit rather than just being mannequins in pretty
places. I have no interest in their age, race or size.

My other issue with catalogues / websites is that most of them just
regurgitate the manufacturers marketing blurb about the product rather
than actually adding to that or even correcting it. I can see why they
do it - much easier than having to assess the product and write about
it, pressure from manufacturers, possible disagreements with
manufacturers etc. but I don't like it.

When researching a prospective purchase on the web I find it makes a
very refreshing change to occasionally find a retailer who has avoided
the trite marketing blurb and actually written something about the
    product.

Well said, but it's the same with all but a very few clothing
catalogues. Occasionally you'll find a catalogue aimed at the 'mature'
end of the market which sports photographs of gentlemen and ladies
greying at the temples - but even those models rarely look 'real'.

Oh I don't know about that. If you're walking at 55 you'll probably be
walking at 75, whereas on average if you're walking at 18 at 38 you'll
probably be snoring in front of the TV with a beer can balanced on the
    beer gut :-)

I stil can't understand it though; when my wife had mail order

Although they're not into "proper" gear, Hawkshead /do/ have older
    models in their catalogue.

Depends on what IS proper gear for hillwalking in the UK IMHO. Most is
utterly over the top and you pay through the nose for it :-(

The 'proper gear' varies from person to person.
I decided to do a brisk walk over a local hill a few days ago, and
wondered whether the jeans I was wearing would be ok, whether I needed a
fleece, and should I wear the Berghaus winter coat.

I decided on Paramo pants, the fleece and the winter coat, and by the
time I had walked 100 yards from the car I was damned glad of all I was
wearing, on what appeared to be the first day of winter.. At my age
    (71) I have to wrap up warm, because if I don't my circulation is not
sufficient to maintain body temperature, and I suffer from neck pain and
headache if I do not wrap both in fleece.
I envy the people I see bareheaded and in shirt sleeves.
Winter walking has become somewhat less than a pleasure these days,
whereas 20 years ago I loved getting my head down and fighting with a
    blizzard.....

Keep up man! We're talking about ageism - models in catalogues , NOT
    gear.
