basic puncture repairs. It was quite an interesting experience - I

I've got to get me one of those tandems ... but a road one, not a

A pretty worthwhile experience, and I'm glad I offered to help! And
now 9 more people will be a little more self-reliant and know how
to fix punctures, and will hopefully ride their bikes more as
a result of tonight. Very rewarding 🙂

We're thinking of maybe doing a semi-regular seminar/class of this
nature (obviously irrelevant to a.b people, I very much doubt if
anyone here needs to learn how to patch a tube!). I'm lead to
believe that there's been some bike shops that have done this
in the past in Melbourne, but it's lapsed?

We're also thinking of doing some basic riding skills seminars,
all the things the newbies don't know, like spinning not grinding
etc ...

Yeah, but that was a long time ago, and was in the
city - we're looking at the outer eastern suburbs. Do you

I got my ATB traiing CD yesterday and I have to say that it does a pretty good job of covering the basics of riding. IMO a lot of the content of the CD should find its way on the BV's site and be freely available, easily some of the most accessible material I've seen.

Got in to things like making sure your quick release levers aren't pointing forward, communication in bunches, bike control, effective breaking: pretty solid stuff I thought. It would be a disservice not to make this stuff available after the ride.

A while ago, when BV first put up their "members only" section,
I contacted them and expressed my (polite) displeasure at such a thing

I think they'd be best served by publishing such things for all,
not just their members. They didn't see it my way though.

That said, not everyone (indeed, not a lot of people) like to learn
from video/DVD etc, and there's a certain social aspect that tends to
go missing too. At this class we ran, I think a few new friendships
were made, and we fed the punters cheesecake & coffee (yes, the
night ran at a loss, but, getting more people cycling, more often,
is better for all of us, right?!)

That's way more sophisticated (and I dare say a lot more expensive! we
charged $10 per head, which included tea/coffee/softdrink and

is the big one. And maybe broken chain fixes? We didn't do chains,
just wheels & tyres. With our audience, that was about all they could
cope with in 3 hours (I'm not kidding!)

Absobloodylutely! I've got a half baked idea to put a note up in the
local supermarket or something offering commuting advice gratis (or
maybe a six pack). Trouble is I've no idea how I'd word such a thing.

Does BV own the copyright to this material or do they source it from somewhere else?

Just send one of the discs to China with "Windows 2006" written on the front - there'll be a million copies of it available within a week!

1 write something,
2. pin it up.
3 next week descide o better wording,
4. write n+1 card,
5 replace n card
6. go to 1.

Goldcross do these.

Sign up to their email list, to find out at which store they will hold
next months one. They cater for about 30 people to come, and
typically book out a few days after the email goes out. I went along
to their advanced course, and found it a bit useful (replacing
deraillers, maintenance of the derailliers etc). I asked them whether
they have an "advanced advanced" course in mind -- packing bearings,
BB maintenance, wheel truing, etc, and they said they are working on
the material for that.

You'd think that kind of thing would take away some of their
business. But it would also make customers happy...
