Why not "saddle post"?

Why does it sound pretentious? Saddle is a better term than seat for a
bike, IMO.

The "proper" term is saddle pillar. At least that is the term I have
seen in many English publications.

Perhaps because if fits into the "seat tube" of the frame.
It is properly a saddle because, unlike a chair, toilet or recumbent,
one generally sits astride a saddle.

Well, not inherently pretentious I suppose. I should have made the
statement more personalized. When a n00b says to me that they "want to
get a new seat" and I reply with some appropriate response/advice and
say "saddle," I feel pretentious. make sense?

In California it would be illegal. CVC 21204 requires that a
bicycle have a seat (yes, the law says "seat" not "saddle"😉.
