  1. I'm sure there's a reason, but if the preferred nomenclature is "saddle"
and not "seat" for the part that your butt rests on, why not call the
post attached to it a "saddle post"?

Unless I get a good reason, I'm bucking the trend and calling it a
    saddle post! Who's with me?!

I appreciate the thought, but I say we switch back to 'seat.' 'Saddle'
sounds pretentious to me...although I feel stool is the most appropriate.

  3. I thought a "saddle post" was something that cost $200 in the red light
district and caused uncomfortable chafing for weeks.

Why does it sound pretentious? Saddle is a better term than seat for a
    bike, IMO.

    Good for you.

    We'll be right ... over ... here.

  6. The "proper" term is saddle pillar. At least that is the term I have
    seen in many English publications.

Perhaps because if fits into the "seat tube" of the frame.
It is properly a saddle because, unlike a chair, toilet or recumbent,
one generally sits astride a saddle.

Well, not inherently pretentious I suppose. I should have made the
statement more personalized. When a n00b says to me that they "want to
get a new seat" and I reply with some appropriate response/advice and
say "saddle," I feel pretentious. make sense?

Don't say it then. :P I call it a sit sometimes and when feeling onery
    I'll call it a perch.

As for seatpost, as you're down south like me--just call it a "settin'
    pole".

A 49 year-old Dutchman will attempt to break the World Hour Record for
riding without a saddle (or a seatpost). Maas van Beek, a former
tandem pilot of Jan Mulder, will attempt to better the mark of 45.848
km set by none other than Fausto Coppi on the track in Alkmaar, The
    Netherlands, on Saturday, October 8.

Sure....but would you feel that way if you were on a horse?

I'd feel that way simply wearing jodphurs to be honest.

    That's just... soooooo... WRONG.

Perhaps we should institute an hour record for those riding with
thumbtacks in their shoes or while wearing a 100 pound backpack.

In California it would be illegal. CVC 21204 requires that a
bicycle have a seat (yes, the law says "seat" not "saddle"😉.

He did it for charity. Though he missed his target of Coppi's record,
    he did manage 42.1036 km.

68 x 11 gear and 205 mm cranks. 53 rpm. No aero equipment. No saddle.
Massive shoulders and arms. He'd been hitting 43 km in training.

Michelle has been riding well over a year without a saddle. She
replaced it with a bouquet of blue artificial flowers after some scum
had stolen it. Nobody's taken her flowers.

And you should see her glutes now!

Zoot - I don't care now nice looking Michelle is, I wouldn't wanna
swipe a bunch of flowers that had spent THAT much time rubbing her
    butt...

    Man, they think of -everything-...

Wonder if they also have laws to cover the chain, spokes, pedals? ;-)
