There must be something about my recipe for spicy apple cake that is
odd. It isn't that the cake tastes bad - it is delicious - but that any
mechanical mixing device I have used preparing it has bitten the dust.
First my hand mixer made than nasty noise of plastic gears losing all
their teeth in a whirry whirry not go roundee stylee, then my venerable
Kenwood Chef decided to support Ken Clarke's bid for the Tory
leadership. At least I presume that was why it was puffing out loads of
noxious smoke.
Anyway, I took the dead and dying to the dump to dispose of them in an
appropriate way. And espied a shiny 20" wheeled bike. cheap Kids BMX
style but with V-brakes and looking almost new. The paint/anodising
hadn't even fully worn off the wheel rims. Even though I was in the car
(OK, it was becasue I was going to Alyth, 12 hilly miles away, to
collect some heavy power tools and didn't want to spend two hours
pedalling with the trailer each way), the chap there recognised me as
the guy with the bike trailer.
"Is this bike looking for a home?" I asked, expecting to subsidise the
beer drinking of the council workmen by a couple of pints or so. "If
you want it, take it" I was told and needed no second bidding. All I
have to do is to swap the pedals for non broken ones and it is ready
for my oldest boy who is just growing out of his 16" bike. And then
his cn be used by the youngest for whom it will be big enough in a few
months. The only adjustment that needs doing is to lower the saddle an
inch. Brakes are fine, tyres are perfect and pumped up, wheels are
true. Bargain!
So I am very pleased..
I'm still looking for an old BMX that is worthy of sacrifice to the
angle grinder though..
