Bike accident kills Commerce Dept. spokesman
Tom McNally, spokesman for the city Commerce Department and a city
employee of more than 20 years, was killed yesterday in a bicycle
accident in Northeast Philadelphia, according to Mayor Street's
spokesman, Joe Grace.
McNally was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk and apparently stopped
short at a red light at the intersection of Tyson and Rowland Avenues.
He ejected from the bike into the intersection and was run over by an
oncoming car, Sgt. Albert Gramlich said. The accident is under
investigation.
McNally, 47, held a variety of jobs throughout his career, most
recently as the city's chief spokesman for the Live 8 concert in July.
"During the last few years I have come to know Tom as a man who
performed his duties with both passion and a professionalism that
inspired all who had the pleasure to know him," the mayor said in a
statement.
"Words cannot describe the heartache I feel over the tragic death of
Tom McNally," Commerce Director Stephanie Naidoff said in a statement.
"He was respected for his sound judgment and clear thinking on media
issues."
