Does shaving your legs (men) really improve your times or scores or is this simply a fad or does it make one "a member of the club" so to speak?
I see men at the gym, usually runners or bodybuilders, who have shaved their bodies completely. Is their some kind of message being sent that I don't see?

Absolutely! I shaved them and went from 11mpm to 5 minutes per mile. Then I shaved my nuts, and took off another 30 seconds. TBR

Shaving your legs, or body for that matter, should not appreciably improve your times. However, there is a psychological effect when shaved. Your legs, arms, chest, etc are now in direct contact with the water and it feels very much different than when you have not shaved. This gives one the feeling you are going faster and therefore may psychologically help you push a little harder, thereby improving your times. It also produces slightly less drag in the water and may physically make you a tad bit faster but if you are not a highly competitive swimmer, chances are you will not see any difference, although you will feel it (Especially when you go to sleep at night and the feeling of the sheets on your legs. Takes a night or two to get used to). Some swimmers will also put a light coating of baby oil on them to better repel the water. However, there is a limit to the amount of lotion or oil you can put on, and if it's too much, you may be DQ'd.

Up to about age 40 I had a full head of hair. Now that I'm older and bald I run like a wild man.

You walk into the room with your pencil in your hand You see somebody naked and you say 'Who is that man?' You try so hard but you don't understand just what you will say when you get home because something is happening here but you don't know what it is do you, Mr. Jones? You raise up your head and you ask 'Is this where it is?' and somebody points to you and says 'It's his' and you say 'what's mine?' and somebody else says 'well what is?' and you say 'Oh my god am I here all alone?' but something is happening and you don't know what it is do you, Mr. Jones? You hand in your ticket and you go watch the geek who immediatly walks up to you when he hears you speak and says 'How does it feel to be such a freak?' and you say 'impossible' as he hands you a bone and something is happening here but you don't know what it is do you, Mr. Jones? You have many contacts among the lumberjacks to get you facts when someone attacks your imagination but nobody has any respect, anyway they already expect you to all give a check to tax-deductible charity organizations Ah you've been with the professors and they've all liked your looks With great lawyers you have discussed lepers and crooks You've been through all of F. Scott Fitzgerald's books You're very well read, it's well known But something is happening here and you don't know what it is do you, Mr. Jones? Well the sword-swallower he comes up to you and then he kneels He crosses himself and then he clicks his high heels and without further notice he asks you how it feels and he says 'Here is your throat back, thanks for the loan' And you know something is happening but you don't know what it is do you, Mr. Jones? Now you see this one-eyed midget shouting the word 'now' and you say 'for what reason?' and he says 'how' And you say 'what does this mean?' and he screams back 'You're a cow' 'Give me some milk or else go home' And you know something's happening but you don't know what it is do you, Mr. Jones? Well you walk into the room like a camel and then you frown You put your eyes in your pocket and your nose on the ground There ought to be a law against you coming around You should be made to wear earphones Cause something is happening and you don't know what it is do you, Mr. Jones? Whoooaaaooooh

Let me see if I've got this straight. First I shave off all my body hair, then I bust out the baby oil. Is that about right?

Bodybuilding: the aesthetics are important in competition.
Running: No
Other sports: more of a health/safety/comfort issue. I shaved the lower part of each leg in HS since I needed to get ankles taped. Having the hair gone made life more pleasant.
As a cyclist/triathlete I shaved because, well, road rash is easier to clean and massages felt better.

None of the semi-elite or elite runners I know do this.
You cross-posted to a swimming group, and yes, body hair creates significant drag. In that sport, it can make a measureable difference. Cycling it may also, but I'm not sure.

That's pretty gay. I get my ankles and wrists and forearms and sometimes my elbows taped when I play football. Feel free to shoot me if I decide to shave my legs. If you can't take pulling out a few thousand hairs, play soccer.

KY Warming gel would be a better choice....At least that's what a pico commi left coast [censored] told me once.
You should not be looking at other men naked. That is just creepy.
Body builders shave to show off their muscle definition. The "runners" who shaved were hitting on you. You know what kind of message they are sending you.
Frightened and confused uh. Maybe you can ask those shaved men to be gentle with you. Remember to relax.
