I wish I had something to say to add to the tremendous lack of content
in this group (apart from Pound/UCI/Lance).
I guess Tyler Farrar's result is pretty good for a guy known as a road
sprinter. It'd be easy for him to coast at this time of the year.
And speaking of World's, did anyone notice Lieswyn's plea (at
cyclingnews.com) for Fred Rodriguez to take better care of his bike in
the upcoming elite RR champs. Funny, but true.

It seems like he has most of the problems when he brings them over to
North America. Does fast freddy ever train in the US or does he spend
all the time now in Europe. Maybe he just needs to spring for better
bike cases. I would suggest trico.

So who are your pics? The course is supposed to be good for a McEwen
or Freire, too bad for him. Has McEwen been doing secret training like
Valverde? Boonen sucked at la Vuelta. Is Devolder going? He could go
solo for a whole lap based on his Vuelta form.

He's been winning races.

Yep.

But that would be the next to last lap. That's Devolder's style. By the
way, he tried to do that in the Madrid stage, but his break didn't last
long.
I hope Belgium and Germany try to shake things up, instead of waiting
for a sprint. If they work with Italy and Australia, there won't be
much to see.

I thought the Belgians would be working for McEwen....

Hombre, I expect a lot from Spain in that regard. Valverde the
super-escaper! Just hoping his knee is OK.

But help is needed. This is a circuit for big-ring climbers, of which
there are plenty in Bel/Ger, but are not frequent in Spain. Mancebo
will surely accelerate twice per lap, but he's already said that the
circuit does not suit him (it goes clockwise) and will be toasted after
his Tour and Vuelta efforts.

Oh, I've been travelling a lot. Brussels seems like so long ago. Just
looking back for results, I see I missed the mountain stage winning,
non-sprinting George Hincapie won at GP Ouest France-Plouay from a big
bunch of 65. I see it barely made a blip on the rbr pick-on-George
radar. He's going to Worlds, right?

Haha!

No he isn't. Was that a jab?

Lombardi thinks it will be a bunch sprint:
VeloNews.com: Everyone says the route will come down to a sprint, what
do you think after examining it?
Giovanni Lombardi: I did an interesting test before the Vuelta. I rode
240km on a long training ride, then I rode back into Madrid and rode
two laps on the course. Though it is harder than Zolder, I am convinced
it will conclude in a mass sprint.

Which big names will be caught up in the crash at the 180° turn 450m from
the finish? It could be a very interesting finish. The pack (or what's left
of it- 50 riders or so?) will be going full speed coming into the turn to
keep the last minutes escapees (Bettini, Vino, etc) in check. Then they just
about come to a stop to take the 180 degree turn, so all the sprinters will
have to be in front if they want to have a chance, BUT not at the very
front, since 450 meters is too long to sprint in front, so the leadout guys
for Petacchi and Boonen and McEwen and Zabel at least will have to get
around even before their sprinter if they want to set up the sprint.
Fortunately, the weather is not calling for rain, otherwise the carnage
could be total. Still, IMO, a 180° turn 450 meters from the end of a 250km
WC race, where guys will be racing with teammates they're not used to is a
recipe for road rash.

i'm humor impaired, so forgive me if i'm being dense, but he's a good
enough time trialist too 🙂
for instance-
Park City Cycling Festival
Under-23 national time trial championship
Syracuse, UT. August 12 2004
1. Tyler Farrar, Health Net-Maxxis
2. Timmy Duggan, TIAA-CREF/5280
3. Blake Caldwell, TIAA-CREF /5280
4. Steven Cozza, U.S National
5. Saul Raisin, Crédit Agricole
(although it's true that worlds is another level of difficulty 🙂

So does he. I have a hard time believing that too many of his Belgian team
mates would ride for him, rather than Boonen (unless Boonen was on a horrible
day).

Particularly given the high number of unexperienced African and Asian
riders in the race. They won't survive long in the group, though.

Dumbass -
Just because you have a crush on him doesn't mean you should let it
affect your judgement of him in other areas.
thanks,
K. Gringioni.

Perhaps if he did a race in the southern hemisphere he would tilt in the
other direction, so a clockwise circuit in Sydney might have suited him.

Considering the acrimony between Davitamon-Lotto (McEwen's team), and
QuickStep-Innergetic (Boonen's team), I would not be surprised in the least
if some of the Belgian riders chose to help their trade teammate rather than
their countryman.
