What I've seen is usually the reverse. Put in some obvious danger
point and people ride accordingly. Put in a slight dogleg or squeeze
point that you can ignore every lap but one and that's what leads to
big pileups. Maybe a crrash before the 180 when everyone is trying to
get to the front before the difficult turn.

So does he. I have a hard time believing that too many of his Belgian

mates would ride for him, rather than Boonen (unless Boonen was on a

Considering the acrimony between Davitamon-Lotto (McEwen's team), and
QuickStep-Innergetic (Boonen's team), I would not be surprised in the least
if some of the Belgian riders chose to help their trade teammate rather than
their countryman.

Hmm, that is something to consider, Steven. There's definitely been some
tension there, but it seems to me that a lot of it has been between the
directors and management of the two teams. It's hard to know if the trade team
loyalties will trump national loyalties at the worlds (Ullrich, Vino and Kloeden
in the 2000 Olympics being an example of it happening).

Things like that have always been said during the worlds but the last
10 year we've always had a homogeneous team where everybody knows and
does his duty. No Italian circumstances where team mates are killing
each other. Quite frankly we don't have the same level of riders to do
that :-) Only in 1999 we could have ridden in Italian style with the
best Belgian team in many years: VDB, Mattan & Farazijn (cofidis),
Museeuw & Peeters (Mapei-Quick Step), Tchmil, Aerts & Van De Wouwer
(Lotto), Van Petegem & Van Bondt (TVM), Wauters (Rabo), Bruylandts
(Palmans)

Only in 2000 in plouay there were problems after the WC. Axel Merckx
should have ridden behind behind Tchmil in favour of Vainsteins who
became his teammate at Domo-Farm Frites the next year. If i remember
correctly...
