Dave, That was me mentioning LED headlights. The ones I was talking about are called Luxeons (or
Luxeon Stars) not the little 5mm ones that you would need a lot of them to do anything. Luckily,
Luxeon makes a 1.25 watt and a 5 watt LED (2.6 watt coming soon) that are very, very bright and have
some throw when used with the correct optics. To narrow the beam down to 6 degrees to get maximum
throw, the optic is rather large at 36mm in diameter. This means it is sized for 2C or 2D size
lights. Here is a link of an awesome 2D version with the 6 degree optics.

I have a 5D Mag with a 5 watt Cyan Luxeon and 6 degree optics. It is a huge thing with blinding
output and that wild blue/green color. Too strange to be used as a headlight although it does get
attention.

Presently, I use the 18-LED flasher on the back of my bent and a 2AA Brinkmann Legend running a
white Luxeon at a current regulated 1.35 watts. It is on my helmet and is very noticable from
several blocks away. It is small so it can't use the 6 degree optics, that is for my next project.
Brinkmann Nexstar 2C with a 500mA regulator hitting a high lumen output Luxeon and those 6 degree
optics. I will keep you posted on how it comes out. It should give me at least 150 feet of throw and
run for 6 to 7 hours on 2 C cells.

I really don't need a headlight to see--just to be seen. If I do decide to start the work commute,
it's on fairly well lit streets all the way. So my priorities are being seen, and battery economy.
I'd rather not go with rechargables and would like to have some decent run time on one set.

Have you considered the EL-200? It is smaller, has three LEDs and has a flashing mode. I'd think
that would be great.

I bought another brand, I disremember which, a small LED light, think it has 3 LEDs. Looks like a
small gray rocket. I got two mounts for it and am going to mount it on my helmet so it shines where
I look. Will make me feel better.

I once was trying to assert my right-of-way over an old beater Pontiac. I tried to go through a
yellow light, but the Pontiac guy making a left across in front of me behind a taxi pretended
not to see
me. I of course expected that and stood my R40 on the front wheel. I explained the error of his
ways to him 🙁) and he saluted me, showing deep respect. :-) Maybe a light on my helmet
will help.

I do not use them, I use alkalines. Haven't tried the new lithiums though.

I also have a flasher-thingee mounted on my stem pointing forward. it has maybe 5 LEDs. They are
greenish-white I believe. I generally have 2 -3 flasher thingees on the rear too.

Well that's good to hear because it's on my short list, and it's on sale at Performance right now!!
I actually had it in my shopping basket last night but decided to wait 'until mid-month when I can
order it and a few more things I need.

compared to any standard halogen light I've had, so much so I'm totally turned off by any LED
headlight setup

It's not dark at 5pm. Also clearly stated usage: Being seen. Not lighting the way I had one too, and
it's a great "being seen" light, only acceptable at for seeing at night up to 8-9mph or so. Battery

I don't doubt its designed more to be seen but even in that regard it didn't appear as bright as the
old single bulb Cateye halogen I had. Besides that it ended up being way too large for the limited
space I had on the Vision T-bar

If I remember the documentation that came with the light really didn't specify how dark it had to be
before the light became ineffective, granted it is designed to be seen and not to see but it didn't
appear to be marketed that way

It is most certainly dark at 5pm *at certain times of the year* where I
live. Scary - put on lights to look like a UFO - type dark.

The person who keeps disagreeing is assuming that the whole world is on the same season and latitude

Yup. I purdy obviously included the information that I wuz talking about the shorter days. And I wuz
contradicted w/o the fella asking me where I wuz, latitude-wise. It gets dark around 4:30-ish and is
dark at 5pm. There may be a blush on the horizon still, if atmospheric conditions allow, but the
constant clouds and fog are part of *MY* experience here, and collectively contribute to the 'dark'.
But I guess we are both right cuz since there are an infinite number of 'places' on the globe both
conditions probably exist at the same time.
