  1. Whole segment on the effects of rising fuel. Average fuel bill
    $200-$300 a /week/. Sheeit!

Anyway lots of stuff about changing driving habits, downsizing car, LPG
conversion, petrol getting siphoned out of tanks in driveways and right
    at the end...

Of course there are cheaper options which may not be family friendly,
five seconds footage of a scooter followed by five seconds rear view of
    a cyclist with messenger bag.

Hey, at least we rated a mention! :-)

  2. man i don't get it. riding down the m5 in peak hour today which was way
worse than usual i couldn't help thinking that rising petrol prices
should be getting cars off the road. anyway not my experience today. of
course passing lots of stationary cars in gridlock, i also noticed that
at a guess more than 95% of them contained a driver and zero passengers.

i wonder at what petrol price there will be a noticable thinning of
    traffic ...

UK experience suggests that it'll be a long time coming. People will
downsize their cars first and then go hungry next. `` Can't afford to
run a car? What sort of loser are you?'' Seems to be the prevailing
    attitude :-(

Downsizing is good. Someone in a tiny Smart is more likely to notice a
    cyclist 🙂
At the moment most car advertisements are pushing V6-V8 and 3 liters up.
Trying to get rid of old stock?

I spotted 138.9 on the way into town for our ride tonight. Even though
I got wet on the way home afterwards, it felt unusually good to be
    on the bike :-)

  6. been thinkin about a sticker (or even jersey design?)
    sayin...

    " 0 cents per litre "

    " petrol prices? who cares? :-) "

" 10km per litre or 100km per latte. No contest! "

I like. Any of them would look good on a jersey or t-shirt.

    I saw 139.9 - do we hear 140? 140? against you sir!

Weather is warming up and I was able to go short sleeved yesterday 🙂 The new train timetable has successfully slowed all trains and not just the late ones + petrol prices are sky high. It's nice to ride a bike...

Maybe this will help with our obesity 'epidemic' - no I can't afford to drive you to Maccas!

  10. The media bleating continued as I got ready to leave home this morning on 7's Sunrise, with them interviewing ppl in various states (obviously at servos), with everybody winging and demanding prices come down (nothing like a 'head in the sand' approach...)

Most poignant bit was having people complain about 'how we have had to change our habits' as if that was a BAD thing! 🙂 "We have had to consider walking to the shops and getting the kids to catch the bus..." shock. horror.

...All of this said of course while in the background the arterial road was still choked with traffic....

(This morning was lovely. Warm breezy ride, bit of rain to keep the interest up, and unusually heavy traffic to whip past with my best 'free (transport) at last' smile on my face.)

I also find myself somewhat amused by the RACV head's bleating about
price gouging and profiteering. News flash: petrol stations need to
re-supply. They can't do that if they don't charge at least what the
    refineries are charging ...

Yeah ... 'twas a great ride in. Very calming, very relaxing. Now, about
an hour later, I think it's time I went to have my shower. 🙂

How about this, slightly US-Centric but does have l/100km:

    Found it here:

I've printed a few and will laminate and use as spokecards, perhaps some of
the cagers will read them and instead of triggering 'how dare that cyclist
not pay for fuel or get caught in traffic, HULK SMASH' they might dust off
the bike they bought many summers ago.

I didn't make it up! I do like it.

  16. Like I always say, I'm fairly certain that most Australians would rather move further away/starve/sell their house (or children) in order to still be able to drive that Prado they've always dreamed of.

This just goes to show that Australia really is 30 years behind the real world. That'd be why there are still so many mullets around.

    Replace Australia with Queensland!!!

I hate to rain on your hopes, but "next-door" going to maccas doubles as
    dad's turn at cooking.

I'm in inner suburban Perth and I got a teenager and a pre-teenager. On the main road into the CBD, within a couple of blocks of home is Maccas, KFC, Hydraulic Jacks, and Chicken Treat. We have a limit of once per month, and only then if we don't have time to make dinner because we have to be somewhere quickly etc. And I make 'em walk down and back. My kids have told some of their mates and their parents about the 'rules' - and those parents just give uncomprehending stares, unable to contemplate that we would have such a limit or that we don't jump in the car for the short trip to Maccas etc. Then again, they all think I am mad because I cycle to and from work when I have 2 perfectly good cars in the garage. Pahh!!

Combining the Maccas and fuel price topics - has anyone seen any news lately on the bio diesel engines which can be fueled on oil from deep fryers etc? What a vision - squeezing some of the obese Macca's fed children into the fuel tank of the car!!

there are equally conservative areas in all the states.
theres little point a pointing the finger at QLD when theres
a lot more people in and around sydney and melbourne...
and for that matter adelaide has a very high population with
    2.3 cars over 3 litres...

    cheers,
