When my kids see these, they get all torn up. I try to gently make the
point that we are responsible for our pets, and we need to watch out
for their safety. At least that way, they will be thinking ahead about
leaving gates open etc.

Feel sorry for the dog, not for me. ;-p
I'll purge my sad feelings by playing with my own dogs.

Jewely was a shelter rescue, (hyperactive border collie) and the two
house mutts were both abandoned strays, as was the little blind and
deaf, very loving, teacup poodle that lives on the insulated back porch
in a doggy corral.

Larry [censored] about having house training problems, howabout a dog that
can NOT be house trained due to handicaps? There are ways to handle that
too.

My compassion for the living will take care of my sadness for the dead.

My housemate came home the other day and left the front yard gate open
after unloading groceries.

I noted it about 2 hours later! Had a panic attack... until I whistled
and both Jewely and Corwyn had not left the yard. :-)

I can't let a dog running around looking for it's owner/home go
unhelped. Just a few weeks ago a nice pedigree got out and we found it
across the neighbourhood from its home. The house sitters didn't know
they had to key lock the gate: the dog knows how to let itself out. It
got disoriented when the sun went down and it was still at the park
looking for its friends. I didn't know the condition of the animal, and
exposure to it could have put me at substantial risk (I think you all
can imagine what happens when you have a severely
suppressed/disfunctional immune system and you get an illness from a
sick animal...). But I just can't let a dog get creamed by a car because
its owners aren't responsible enough to have a dog (it was an honest
mistake in this case, but this is not the first or the second time I've
had to stop with my wife this year to help a dog). I really get angry
with people that just let their animals roam like that when they're at
work or out of the house. It's the vast minority of pet owners, but damn
it [censored] me. I really hate having to call the council to come get a dead
pet.

It was already dead. :-( I did not have that chance...

A few months ago, there was a beautiful black chow running loose. I got
a piece of rope and attached it to it's collar and tied it up out front.
I was fixin' to go to Austin so did not have time to deal with it.

When I got home later that afternoon, the dog and the rope were gone.
;-) I later saw the dog in it's yard driving around the 'hood, or at
least it looked like the same dog.

When my neighbors mutt or her beagle get loose, I take them home and
help her fix her gate.

I've also rescued dogs dragging chains.
If they have tags, I capture the dog and call the owner.

I hate chains tho'. I have a fenced yard and a hotwire to keep the BC
from jumping the fence. Sorry, but I don't consider hotwires to be
cruel. One or two shocks and they never go near the boundary again.
Remote training. They never associate it with "me" so we stay buddies.
