I'm Atlanta, we're not running out of gas. That was a rumor, and people
are panicking and traffic's all backed up around gas stations. Now, I
have a little more than a quarter tank in my car right now, and I was
intending to fill up tonight because I HAVE to take my car to the
mechanic tomorrow morning, no matter what. It should be enough to get
me there and back *fingers crossed*. If people have calmed down by the
morning, I'll go get some on my way, but it's already up to between 5
and 6 dollars a gallon. The governor called for a freeze on prices
where they are now, which is still way too damn high. Unnecessarily.
We're not running out of gas.

People are certainly topping off their gas tanks this
evening, reacting to the rumor mill I presume. Prices have
jumped 50 cents a gallon in my area just today, with another
dollar anticipated tomorrow. I've neither seen nor heard
any evidence of actually running out of gas, though it won't
surprise me to see certain stations deplete their stock
given sudden burst of demand today...which will further feed
the stories of course. On the way home tonight I passed at
least 12 gas stations. All but one of them had not a single
car pumping gas. 1 had cars backed up around the block.
Guess which stories we'll hear about in the news?

I have three immediate family members (and their families)
all of whom have lost their homes in the Biloxi/Ocean
Springs area. We've only heard from one of them, who
conveyed this information. Nothing from the rest since the
storm hit.

Does any have to wonder if I give a flying f*#k about the
price of gasoline? If it runs short we'll deal with it, one
way or another.

Wow. Out here in California I had no idea this was happening. I mean, I
saw the storm news, but $6 a gallon? At that price they will start shipping
gas over the Rockies from here. I'm going to top off my tank tonight.

Luna---you live in Atlanta? I used to...but I still get the Atlanta tv
stations via my sattelite. The news today on channel 2 said several gas
stations have already gone dry. You're saying this is not so?
...because saying there is a gas problem in Atlanta is CAUSING the gas
fear, here....

I lived in Morningside, right off N. Highland, close to the Caramba
Cafe.. What part of the city do you live in? I kind of miss
it....sometimes. LOL, well, mostly I miss Thai food.

What I dont miss is the traffic.....and the smog.

And I thought we had problems when gas jumped from 2.44 to 2.64 in two days.
It is still going up though - I saw one at 2.79 after work today. I am in
San Antonio. I have a brother in Biloxi who lives in a brick apartment.
With the last two minutes left before his cell phone died they got through
to my SIL's friend (couldn't get my parents) and said their sliding glass
door had shattered, the car wouldn't start and they lost the roof off their
apartment. Without the car - can't charge the cell phone. Haven't been
able to get through on the phone since Monday morning. If I could, I would
coordinate with my brother to get him to Texas. (625 miles). It is so
frustrating - knowing that you could do something if only you could get
through. And I told him Sunday night to leave and come to Texas - they
thought they could ride it out in a brick building. I work for army
recruiting and we lost our entire New Orleans recruiting battalion - most of
the families will be without homes. The battalion is on a second floor so
may or not sustain damage. I know so many people without homes now.

No, it's true. A lot of gas stations are out, because people are
panicking and filling up, because they think gas will run out long term.
If everyone just fueled like the usually did, then the stations wouldn't
be running out. There IS gas to refill the stations, because the
majority of Georgia's fuel comes from places that weren't affected by
the hurricane, but now we have to wait for the stations to get filled up
again.

My parents were in New Orleans the day before this hit. As I told
them, they were the last of those who saw the old New Orleans in all
its glory. Sad how bad the storm was, tragic are the losses. We are
setting up food drives at my work, (Dish network), to help out some.

Hi JJ -

Yeah, I hope things work out with your family quickly too. Going to
interesting (for me anyway) to see how these problems get solved and
who helps/hurts the solutions.

I'm in Boston and the only effects so far are rising gas prices. That
will change with time as colder weather increases the need for heating
fuel which inturn, competes for refinery resources. Back in the days
of the Arab oil embargo's, people would top off their tanks at every
opportunity as we'll see them do again. I remember back then seeing a
statistic that this behavior produced an additional 20% demand over
normal, for gasoline. So for a while at least, the gas crunch is
going to be exaggerated by this phenomena and the actual gravity
(however severe) of the problem is goiing to be less than it seems.

Huh, I didn't see it that way. There is enough room in the human heart
to feel grief and sorrow for those who have died and are going to die,
for those who have lost loved ones, for those who have lost all that
they own, for the destruction of beloved American cities, and yet still
there is room left to worry about the impact on yourself and your own
