Jim North London.Buy a mapping gps (several brands), buy mapsoftware (several brands) or use
software (several brands) to make your own digital maps.
google in uk.rec.walking for previous threads.--

You will probably need one that can display O/S mapping and because of
licensing wrangles I believe the only current devices are Magellan, but I
may be completely wrong of course!Jon

and download it from your PC to your GPS.--

The only maps you can load onto Garmin handhelds are Garmin's MapSource
products (plus a few 'homebrew' maps). The only MapSource products for the UK are only street / road maps.
For homebrew maps, these free contour maps are pretty good:
http://www.smc.org.uk/books/books_contour_maps.htm
But they are only contours and summits / trig points, i.e. no paths.I think there are a few people working on free footpath maps, but they
are only for very limited areas of the country.--

>may be completely wrong of course!I've got a copy of this software. It does show tracks and paths, but is
nothing like following an OS map. It's quite hard to distinguish
visually between paths, water features, contours and your own
track (i.e. the breadcrumb trail) at least on my monochrome
Meridian Platinum. Probably better on a colour version.Other major irritations are :
No indication of whether a path is a private path or a right of
way. Can be a problem in some areas, may not matter on open access
land.PC software works only in lat/long : no possibility of entering
routes or waypoints using grid refs. The receiver itself does,
however, allow the use of grid refs as you'd expect. It isn't a total disaster, but it's definitely something you'd
want to try before spending your hard-earned cash on. PDA-based
solutions with full raster maps will probably give something
more reasonable but you'll also need waterproof packaging and
some means of keeping the battery charged : dedicated GPS
receivers are still better at this.-adrian

Jim North London.Magellan have a 'topo' map of the UK available for their handsets, but
it is missing a large number of ROWs and paths (but hey, the OS maps are
wrong too!). You can actually check out the area you care about at the
Magellan website and see how bad it is...Garmin claim (3 months ago, when I last dinged them) to be still
negotiating with the OS about getting the data for UK topo maps for
Garmin handsets. Do not hold your breath - the OS are bandits and don't
need the money, Garmin are bandits and don't need the maps. I have put a
complete set of contour maps, peaks, and trig pillar, data (in Garmin
format) out on the SMC website, but that won't help you with paths. I am
working through the footpaths (ROWs) in South Shropshire .. 20 parishes
down, 184 to go. Do not hold your breath there either.I believe other folks are doing other bits of the country ... google for
them.Actually building your own Garmin maps (using gpsmapedit and cgpsmapper)
isn't that hard, but it is time consuming (and you either have to walk
the paths, or hand-digitize over OS mapping, aerial photos or whatever). If you don't mind carrying a PDA/PPC around with you, you can do a
'moving map' over an OS 1:25k display (either from someone like
tracklogs/memory map/anquet/etc., or from a digitised paper map).
Downside is it ain't that portable, and it'll eat batteries (compared to
a 'real' GPS).HTH.

co-ordinate pairs for turnpoints), I don't believe Anquet have maps in
that format.--

should do what you want but not a aware of any that are weatherproof.Gerald

I'll be using it with printed and laminated maps from the Anquet software.--

Good shout....a similar combination works for me.
Geko 201 and MemoryMap. Obviously no onscreen contour map but if you
download the route (I don't) and/or waypoints (I do) it can provide
some information e.g. zoom out to get a feel of where you are in
relation to the peaks (waypoints in my case). Zoom in for directional
assistance.David.

imagine but I wonder how practical this will be on the trail.Even with such a machine there is no substitute for a map and a compass -
really!--
