That should deal with the little critters. Unfortunately, it will also delete any message which
includes the text "uc.transport" or "uc.rec.driving", but as we use the generic term "uk.tosspot"
here it should not be too much of a problem. After you apply the filters you will only still see
this message because I have replaced "uk" with "uc" when referring to the uk.tosspot groups.

A note about Forte Agent: it is trivial to hack around the system so you get a free copy. However,
some bloke has written an excellent program - so just pay your £18, the author deserves it!

Select the newsgroup you want to deal with.

From the Group menu, select Properties. This brings up a box called "Properties for
selected groups".

Select the "Crossposts" tab.

Check the checkboxes and choose the action you want for crossposted messages.

This just deals with any crossposted messages, rather than specific to UK.tosspot, so I have it set
to mark them read. That way, the posts are all still there, but the crossposted ones attract a good
deal less attention.

If you subscribe to uk.tosspot and uk.rec.cycling, a crossposted message will still appear unread in
uk.rec.cycling, but the same condition will show them read in uk.tosspot. In other words, it only
shows the message read if it has already been retrieved in another group.

In URC as viewed from here using Agent, the above message (which I spammed to alt.test etc) did
indeed appear in Agent marked read, below your message which wasn't. I did all the posting from
Mozilla to avoid any side effects, and didn't open any messages in Agent. All I did in Agent was to
reload headers for subscribed NG's.

Indeed, you speak the truth! Not exactly intuitive, that "feature". Its back to Mozilla for me,
then, as thats easier than persuading the tosspots to move to uk.aardvark, and less invasive than
having posts deleted for having the wrong content. (Well, not quite back, as I only got as far as
testing Agent, which appears to be an exercise full of disappointments). On the plus side, I've
saved 18 quid.

I find it very useful. In fact I set all my groups not to download messages which have already been
downloaded in other groups.

I suggest you stick with it for a little longer. Forte Agent is a very powerful newsreader.

I had problems with an email message recently using Eudora.

The message was from a friend who went camping and walking on the Welsh borders. One night they had
a BBQ, and at the weekend the campsite was inundated with Duke of Edinburgh teenage girls.

I was rather alarmed that the message was marked with two red chilli symbols warning me that it
contained offensive language. I was rather shocked by this, but when I opened it I could not see
what Eudora objected to. I tried selectively deleting parts of the message to identify the offending
bit. It wasn't the reference to sharing a shower with 16 teenage girls or to Ian's sausage being
BBQed. It turned out to be the word Dyke, in *Offa's Dyke*.

I had to tell my friend to watch her languge in future.

Nope, Agent v1.92 won't let me filter Usenet messages on anything other than subject: and various
sender: fields. Typing raw-body: just gives me an error message.

Yes, I have got mine to filter posts that crosspost to more that a certain number of newsgroups,
thereby avoiding multiple group spam. Selecting crossposts to specified groups is not a problem.
