  1. 187 today. Shouldnt have surprised me---Ive been sliding down the
slippery slope. It's my mind. I have a long standing, cyclic depression
thing, any way...and the news about my gums, losing a bunch of teeth,
getting a partial plate....kicked up a lot of "stuff". (getting old,
gonna die, no point, any way, my life is over and Im just measuring
Time, who cares if an old toothless broad is fat, life is a disease with
a poor prognosis, we all wither and croak, my best years are behind me
an the rest to come will be a downhill slide toward the Void...I'll die
alone and with luck somebody will discover my mouldering corpse before
my dogs starve..... nothing matters.....you get the idea.

It's my mind. lOL, ive been here before---it aint new territory. The
worst thing about depression is, all this [censored] sounds TRUE when i
hear my mind say it. I sometimes dont even realize Im depressed---it
feels like Ive stumbled into real Truth and any ideas I might have had
previously about life being fun or rewarding or that losing weight
matters were the Lies...and the Truth is, life sucks and everything is a
pointless endeavor with no purpose but to fill the time, which is
    dwindling uncontrollably, anyway...

As i read these words, my objective mind knows, "That's the sound of a
depressed mind, blathering doom and gloom." That alone is progress,
believe it or not. To begin to remember that Im in pretty good health,
have no money problems, a paid-for house, some dogs who depend on me and
a few good friends is progress. When Im deep in the Hole, I cant even
    remember the good stuff.

So.....Im feeling better enough to be able to grab hold a little,
LOL....and begin the climb back up from the Hole.

Anyway, that's where Ive been the last two, three weeks, but things are
looking up and Im ready to get back on the stick. The "point" is...well,
ME. There may or may not be a "point", universally. I am the "point". I
am the one it matters to.

    It's probably mostly water.
My weight can fluctuate 5 lbs. over a couple of days. :-)

Watermelon, celery, herbals, can be naturaly diuretics, or just cut the
    sodium and flood with water.

    Cheers!

  3. I had a gaping hole in my mouth so I got a bridge. Shortly after, I
broke another tooth in the front of my mouth for which I have an
appointment on Saturday. Going through a divorce with 2 kids after 16
years to boot.....still have not had a bad carb for as long as I can
remember. I feel so good that nothing can bother me. Get help if you
need it but do whatever you can to feel good about yourself.

You may be B vitamin deficient as well as C vitamin deficient. B
vitamin deficiency leads to anxiety, depression, and in worse case
    scenarios neuropathy.

Try a couple of b vitamin complex, stress formula, early in the day
with food. You will probably feel better within a few days. I did and
it pretty much cured me of my anxiety and depression.

And don't forget your vitamin C. It works well to support the b
    vitamins.

Glad you're feeling better, Lass. I've been there, too, especially as I
had to cope with various physical things. Ever seen the movie "Airplane
2" where Elaine tells Ted that her boyfriend is "falling apart"? The
camera then shows her boyfriend with various body parts literally
falling off of him. I kind of felt like that sometimes. If I were to
stop taking Zoloft, I'd probably feel like that again. It's hard to
deal with yet ANOTHER physical blow. In fact, a fall that hurt my back
back at the end of 1995 was the start of an ongoing depression (DESPITE
the Zoloft) that led to my huge weight gain. It wasn't the inactivity
resulting from the injury -- it was that it was yet another major blow
to me at a time when I had been doing so WELL -- it was like Fate just
would NOT leave me alone, no matter how hard I tried, and I just kind of
gave up on a lot of things. I only started to pull out of it when I
started eating low-carb and realized that I CAN control something and I
can feel CONSIDERABLY better while doing it.

Sounds like you already know that a key aspect in trying to overcome
depression is to focus on what you CAN do.

I didn't. I was really good at rationalizing my depression, because
after all, if you're looking for it, there is plenty of evidence to
support the attitude of "Life sucks, then you die." What got me out of
the hole was just living anyway, even if I didn't feel like it. Waiting
around to get motivated to do something with my life just kept me stuck,
so I decided on a plan of "do it anyway." I started by just going
through the motions. I got a job, started going out with friends, even
though I'd really rather have stayed on the couch or in bed. I just
pretended to care about stuff. There was this constant nagging voice
saying "What's the point? This is all stupid" and I'd try my best to
just turn off those feelings and get out of bed anyway, take a shower
anyway, get dressed, go to work, etc. I was like a zombie, but at least
I was moving. Gradually, I started to feel better, and I realized the
best cure for my particular depression was action. Just having
something to focus on, some goals to work towards, kept me from focusing
so much on how I felt at any given moment. I'm still introspective, but
now it's more like an occasional check up, a quick "Hey, how am I? Ok.
Now I got stuff to do."

  15. Luna gets it--Glassman assumes "getting help" is new news or something.

Trust me,Glassman....been there, done that. lots. The psychiatric system
is largely a sham. Drugs in the form of antidepressants is all they
have to offer---and Ive been taking Prozac for,oh...20 years. It keeps
the lows from beig AS low, but they call it 'cyclic depression" for a
reason. It comes....and goes....and the events of life have little to
    do with either one.

You learn to keep putting one foot in front of the other untiol it
    passes---just like Luna descibed.

I have read that a number of people, in this newsgroups, while in a
state of depression ate food as comfort.

I was just wondering how many are like me.

I got fat because I loved to eat good food, and love to drink good wine
and whiskey. Hell I even like bad wine and whiskey.

I enjoy sitting with other people and swapping lies and eating pizza.

Who else in this group got fat just by enjoying life.

No one,or thing, but my own doing, got me fat.

People who eat when they're depressed (or in my case, simply
stressed) choose to eat like pigs as a coping mechanism. You chose to
eat like a pig because you consider it some sort of recreational
activity. In both cases, it's a choice.

  20. I got fat slowly just by eating a little more than I burned up. I love
food, too, but gave up drinking a few years ago, still ate enough to slowly
gain. I ate some junk food but not a lot, always had at least one good
balanced meal a day and more likely two.
