  1. I'm currently running some steel crank arms, 165s and very heavy (used
for a DH trip to the Alps) but overkill for my next holiday and normal
use. I'm using a nice sexy set of almost un-used middleburn hardcote
(non-compact) rings and i'd like to keep them if poss. So heres the Qs
    - a)what arms are available these days for non-compact rings and b)
would you get those arms or get a full compact crankset for a little
more? I'll be needing a BB too so may as well go splined.

Any help appreciated - looking in the £100ish mark. Quick search
reveals nothing but 'I've got a creaky BB' posts.

  2. It is hard to find non-compact crank arms, you can pick them up second
hand quite cheaply if you are patient.
Whatever you decide, if it were me I'd definitely avoid getting a
splined BB and crank. Do you bend square taper BB's?
    Steve.

Whys that? Seem ideal to me?

I bend the arms not the BBs 🙂 So far ive destroyed two sets of old
shimano deore type ones and snapped a set of gigantex carbon pro arms.
    🙂

So far the three splined BBs I've had(*) have lasted much less
well than the square taper ones. They don't have a hard life either
since they're only needing to cope with XC riding and a bit of
    commuting.

The UN7[x] in my old steel frame has probably done 2k miles off
road and 3k miles of commuting and is still beautifully smooth, quiet
    and free of play.

Currently the Shimano Octalink and Raceface ISIS BBs seem OK
after ~600 miles each but they don't have the "as new" feel that the
square taper Shimano one does despite maybe an order of magnitude fewer
    miles🙁

On the upside, at least the splined cranks I've got are a bit
lighter and pimpier than the sqaure taper ones now in the spares box!

    * Truvativ ISIS bb was particulary short lived. About 800 miles.

  5. Tim,

I've had so many problems with square BBs im willing to give anything a
try lol. Looks like I'll be going for the Shimano LX (last years, going
cheap with BB and rings for 70£ UK) but im open to opinions. I looked
at raceface but couldnt really stump up the kind of cash they want -
    lovely looking kit though.

I've not yet had a splined crank drop work loose and drop off as
I had with square taper (despite putting them on with care, grease and a
torque wrench). I am really very pleased with the splined cranks I've
got, I just wish the bottom brackets would last as well as the square
    taper ones did for me🙂

Merlin have a deal going on RaceFace Evolve chainsets for
    49.95UKP if you're interested.

Theres your problem, don't grease 'em.
    Steve.

  8. I would love a set i must say, but im mildly dubious about the BB
reports - i hear the drive sides fail in next to no time.

  10. I used to grease my square tapers too - strangely coincided with me
tightening one til it split the arm cos it kept coming loose. Never
bothered after that. Stripped a few threads though,

    Holy war time! 🙂
If correctly tightened cranks shouldn't work loose whether
the spindle is greased or not- both according to lore & the mech. engs.
    I work with.
Right or wrong, I've always assembled things with a spot of
grease to ward off the seize-demon & it's only my cranks which have ever
come loose, not those I've put on for other people or pulled & replaced
    when servicing their bikes.
