I am invariably a solitary cyclist, but I have been persuaded for once to take part in a mass-participation charity thingie. Now when I cycle I drink a lot of water to take care of hydration; this leads to the frequent need for, er, unhydration. When on my own, taking a leak requires only a hedge at the corner of a field or whatever, but this may be trickier with a thousand or so cyclists milling about. So, is there some kind of protocol for this sort of event? Do I sneak up a side road? Or do I adopt a more macho approach, jump off the bike and announce "That's me off for a slash, then!" Or do I simply have to grin and bear it until I reach the "feeding station"?

Sneaking up a side road, or nipping discreetly behind a hedge are acceptable! You won't be the only one!

Which reminds me of an amusing shot in this years ITV2 TDF coverage. One of the riders is hanging back, and the TV camera is watching him. The guy's fumbling with his shorts, then the producers appear to suddenly realise what's going on, and cut the shot just in time.

Keep riding, aim right, and get the BMW drivers as they pass.
Or, use a hedge. I for one *hate* peeing in public (obviously some deep mental scar from my childhood) and will seek out the densest hedge I can find. Or a pub - swift half, and guilt-free wee. Of course too many swift halves just exacerbates the problem...

LOL! Would that I had the power in my declining years to shower them impressively enough! -- Brian G

Maybe you should consider one of those saddles that come equipped for it?

Not a problam on the Dunwich Dynamo - it's dark :-)

Or a Camelback?
Jon
Now you've really lost me. I haven't a clue what kind of saddle Nick Kew is on about, but no doubt the joke will be on me when it dawns on me. But a Camelback? I use one of those for touring and very good it is at getting water into me, but I don't see how it could help in getting it out again. Maybe there's something peculiar about camel physiology that's passed me by?

I think Jon was suggesting some sort of Camelback-catheter system.

You'd need a catheter!
And a divided container would be a good idea, too :-)

Now I'm feeling distinctly sweaty. There are some facets of life which are better not considered too closely until needs must. This confusion between a camel's back and its bladder and the introduction of items like catheters (doubtless life-saving for some, of course, but distinctly quease-inducing for me) are not helping me with my already sceptical view of a mass-participation ride! I think I'll stick to a quick wee behind a hedge if that's all right. -- Brian G

Except those pissing were covered in reflective garb (1) and those passing lit them up like a reflective christmas tree.
Tim (1) Self selecting group, obv. Those not covered in reflective garb retained the status of stealth pisser.
Perhaps I've got it all wrong but I thought the need to hydrate was because the liquid is lost by the cycling activity through perspiration etc, not by needing to pee more. If the extra liquid is going straight through then there must be too much liquid surely?

You have it wrong, kind of.
You do need to replace the liquid lost through perspiration etc, but in doing so, the body extract what it needs from your chosen rehydration fluid, and discards the rest.
