I should be getting the resprayed frame back from Cecil Walker pretty soon and so it will be time to put the bike back together. The bike came with Campag Chorus groupset and a pretty crappy set of Look pedals that are pretty worn out.
I am looking at buying a new set of road pedals and as I have been running SPDs on my roadie, SS, and mtb for a number of years I am looking for some advice on which ones to get. I have a pair of Shimano shoes that I scored a while ago from ebay and they have a couple of sets of Look cleats that came with them (one red set, one black). Initially I thought that I would just go with the Look pedals so that I had a couple of spare sets of cleats but now I am approaching it with an open mind.
Anyone got any feedback, observations, etc on different types of road pedals. I will probably only go for middle of the range type pedals though so I am not looking for feedback on the super expensive ones as it will only make me jealous. I was having a look at a set of the Shimano Ultegra level pedals but I seem to recall some guys having problems with them creaking (Blah??).

i've recently put a set of look 5.1's on my bike. they are pretty decent and i'd guess what would typically be defined as 'mid range'. am i happy with them?
i came into road biking from a few years of mountain biking in which i started out with shimano spd's. i never cared for them much, just felt they were generally a bit fidly to get into and riding trails in the wet they'd incessantly clog. switched to time atac's and never looked back. i don't like the look's to the same degree that i like and feel very comfortable in the atacs. with that in mind i demoed a set of the new crank brother quattro's last week (same concept as the atacs for road bikes) and am basically sold. i think as soon as i get around to it i'll swap a pair in for the looks. of course just my observations and ymmv.

I was just going on about how nice the Ultegra PD6610Rs I got from ProBikeKit.com are.. so much so that I stuck them on the trainer bike and the new toy.. nice and wide, rock sold snap to them.. no creaks that I've experienced... A$88.87 from ProBikeKit, there is no place in .au that comes close to that.. at 300g a set they may not be the lightest pedals around, but going on the 105 540's I've had for a year or so they'll last the distance..

I was just going on about how nice the Ultegra PD6610Rs I got from ProBikeKit.com are.. so much so that I stuck them on the trainer bike and the new toy.. nice and wide, rock sold snap to them.. no creaks that I've experienced... A$88.87 from ProBikeKit, there is no place in .au that comes close to that.. at 300g a set they may not be the lightest pedals around, but going on the 105 540's I've had for a year or so they'll last the distance..

I've got ultegra (SPD-SL) pedals and have no complaints at all about them. I wore one set out after some 25,000km, I think that's pretty good. The cleats last ages too and are ok to walk on.

I'm loving my new Quattros, though they are squeaking a bit. I could never get the hang of the cheap Welgo single sided SPD-R pair that came on the bike.

That is a pretty good price.....does it include the cleats?? Also, what sort of postage rates do they charge for shipping to Oz - I have some relatives over there so I am wondering if it might be worth me having stuff shipped to them and then get them to post it via normal postage services.

i've got VP-133 MTB pedals on my roadie. big chunky numbers. sure you want road pedals, i still wanted to wear my boots too. my priorities were, not expensive, but not cheaparse, and hold up a fat barstard like me 😉 the VP133s cost me 100$, shoes were run[1] out stock, at 170$, diadora MTB something ... no idea of the model#

Don't get me wrong, it gives me the [censored]. Shoes and cleats (and bolts) have been replaced (original shoes were shimanos, so I'd hope it wasn't them)- they still creak. They've been lubed, cleaned and re-lubed (with a variety of different lubes); they still creak. I'm not so silly to assume that all examples of this pedal will creak, but mine do, and that's the only experience I have with them. Took quite a while for it to happen though, so maybe it's atypical.
