  1. hi,

does anyone have any advice for avoiding blisters/heel rubs/toe rubs etc on
    long hikes?

i did half of offas dyke recently and i'm glad i didnt do the other half, my
feet were destroyed at the end of it - really very painful toe rubs on my
little toes where they had been rubbing the toe next to them.

any advice on toughening feet up, or products that would help etc

    thanks

Sounds like you need a slightly wider fitting boot, or half a size bigger.
Smear a bit of vaseline on the offending toes and invest in some Smartwool
    socks.

Traditionally walk more often in your boots to toughen up your feet, also
your feet will change the shape of your boots.

I've heard that applying surgical spirit for your feet in the days
leading up to a long walk helps to toughen you feet up, or possibly
soaking them in Tea - of course these might just be old wives tales!

Personally having suffered from extensively blistered feet whilst doing
sections of the SWCP my feeling is that I'd rather put my faith (and my
feet) in a well fitting good comfortable pair of boots any day!

  12. Surgical spirit used to be good for hardening feet up(but dont apply until
your feet are mended). The best stuff for protecting swollen or hot spots
is melanin - like a plastic film over gauze - because it is non-adherent but
also allows movement quite well whilst protection. Personally, I'd never
use those dreadful compeed things - they tend to rip off more skin than they
keep. You might also be advised to wear a liner sock to allow slip between
the two pairs of socks and take out some of the friction from your feet. My
advice would be regular stops to air your feet and wash and allow them to
breathe each evening - this tends to dry them well.

As the other person said, try changing your boots if it happens loads.

You can put sportstape on your *hotspots* before you go walking. There will
be no direct rubbing of your skin, your skin will not get hot and you won't
    get blisters.
