But was the effect real or was the surgical spirit a placebo?

It sounds like a bad idea to me.

It may sound like a bad idea, however it still works. Remember a lot of
blistering is caused by the top layer of skin getting damp and soft ..
not all blistering, but enough that having tougher (and less prone to
dampness) skin can help. If it's placebo it's a very convincing one.

any advice on toughening feet up, or products that would help etc

I tend to agree with a number of the posters here; I reckon that you have
the wrong size boots. A couple of years ago, when buying some Scarpa boots,
I discovered that I needed a wide fitting - something that I had never had
to do before. I've since realised that most of my shoes benefit from a wide
fitting. Maybe it's time for some new boots?

But, aside from investing in a new pair ...

... Smartwool socks are superb and - I think - will give yes less trouble
than socks with a high synthetic content. Vaseline works well. Smear it all
over your feet before a long walk. You'll find that there are some
specialist foot care products but none are any better than Vaseline. I
always carry some Compeed blister plasters with me. Although I've never had
to use these I'm amazed by how many people I end up giving them to!

Huh? You're supposed to leave those on until they fall off by themselves
(usually when soaked in hot water like a bath), not rip them off every 24
    hours.

Well, when they have managed to tear large amounts of skin off by friction,
there tends to be little point in allowing them to fall off.
