That makes sense for his US races, where there's always another
race, but not in possibly his only Tour participation where chances

Chavanel's wheel, having been in the break all day. And in his own words,
he isn't here to take 2nd places. He also said it wasn't a disappointment
that they didn't make it, he thought they would be caught much earlier.
Apparently he has never had this scenario happen to him (in a long break,
caught by the bunch on the last straight) because he said it had to happen
one time or another, and he was just happy to be in the Tour while it
happened.--

Hey, I was at Collegiate Cycling Nationals in Wichita Falls, TX
and in the downtown criterium,
there was no one there except for team members. Luckily,
there were separate men and women's divisions which filled up
the crowd to almost 100.-ilan

or a motorcycle rally in the last squillion years.There are only about three races in the US with a big audience,
not just because Americans don't know about bike racing, but
because there are only about three big races that have the pull
to close roads at a place and time where any spectators could
conceivably show up. Even the Lower Manhattan Financial District
Cycling Championships is actually held in a place that's
semi-deserted on weekends, despite being in the densest population
county in ths US. -
