  1. Some of you may know I had a Holter monitor (my own personal echocardiogram)
attached earlier this week for a period of 24-hour monitoring. I got a
message from the doctor's office a while ago. "You have some minor
arrhythmias but it's nothing to worry about and doesn't require treatment
unless it continues to bother you." Uh... it IS bothering me, that's why I
had the test in the first place! I called back and left a message because
I'm really not sure what to think.

Meanwhile, I continue to have pain radiating from my shoulder down my left
arm and since the test the somewhat disconcerting feeling of my left arm
going "to sleep" periodically, which is really annoying. (Don't you hate
that tingling pins & needles feeling?!)

At any rate, I still don't know much of anything. I'm going in on Monday
afternoon to discuss this further with my doctor.

Sure sounds like a pinched nerve in your neck to me, Jill. Sometimes,
physical therapy can help, other times, the treatment of choice is surgery.
Hopefully, it won't come to that, but if it does, there's a sweetie in RFC
who can offer you some reassurances.

Well, I'm glad the test showed no major problem. Hopefully, the
treatment for a "minor" arrhythmia is simple, fuss-free, and effective.
Very disconcerting when your cardiac system isn't working without
    problems.

Hmmmmm (stroking a non-existent goatee) Sounds like pressure on a
blood vessel and/or nerve? I gather your doctor has ruled out
    cardiac-related pain?

get the names of a good Cardiologist from him/her.

Yeah, but... a pinched nerve does not cause arrhythmia ( : an
alteration in rhythm of the heartbeat either in time or force). Of
course one can simultaneously have a pinched nerve AND a pulmonary
condition. I would seek a second opinion, from a Cardiologist.

Actually, this is why he ordered the test in the first place. His first
thought was it is stress-related and he gave me anti-inflammatory pills
(which made me sick) and lidocaine pain patches. He didn't think it was
cardiac related but ordered the Holter monitor just in case.

In spite of the fact that nothing has been done to alleviate your
discomfort, I read this as good news. The arrhythmia isn't life-threatening,
and is apparently not even worthy of grave concern. So the only treatment
needed is for the SYMPTOMS, rather than the underlying cause. I'm sure your
symptoms will be fairly easy to treat.

Jill, I'm glad to here there's nothing major going on, but definitely get
more info! The shoulder pain and tingling can certainly be a PITA-if he
says it's not related to your arrythmias, he needs to do some looking at
your nerve roots. JMHO as one who had the same and ended up in BAD pain!

A cardiologist read her Holter. If she wants to be examined by another
cardiologist, she's free to do so. But if she relies on insurance, payment
for seeing another cardiologist may not be an easy matter to resolve.

Of course a pinched nerve won't cause an arrhythmia - depending on what
nerve is being pinched/stimulated, that is. It's also possible that a
pulmonary condition is involved, but I don't recall that she mentioned
    having one.

Your definition of arrhythmia is insufficient, as it doesn't address
causation. There are many reasons that a person could develop an arrhythmia,
and most of them effect the peripheral nervous and circulatory systems as
well. The conduction disorders linked to arrhythmias are diagnosed via
electrocardiograms and time studies like Holter monitoring. (Note to
jmcquown: a Holter recording produces an electrocardiogram, not an
echocardiogram as you stated in your original post.)

She could have an arrhythmia and an unassociated nerve injury, or she could
have an arrhythmia with related neurovascular impairment and discomfort. But
whatever she has, she is certain that it is still bothering her. Her doctor
told her to come back if it was bothering her. There ya go. She should go
back to her doctor, and insist on more specialist referrals if she does not
    get satisfaction.
