  1. My original goal, set when I was over 300, was 165. Today is 165.9. So, I
guess I have nine tenths to go....

Ending my dining out has put my weightloss progress back on track. However,
I'm getting opposition from friends and family. "Don't get too thin." "Are
you weak? Don't get too weak." "You don't look like you are having
    trouble."

By the standards I find on the internet, I could be considered normal weight
for 5'8" all the way down to 137. 165 is listed as overweight, and my body
confirms it with odd bulges of fat.

    311/165.9/150

  2. There's a difference between overweight and overfat. Right now it sounds
(and looks) like you are overfat. Your weight wouldn't be so bad for
someone that exercised regularly for a couple of years.

    per http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=lean :

    1) Not fleshy or fat; thin.
    2) Containing little or no fat.

Most folks with a BMI of 22.8 would be considered "lean".

Was there a point to your question?

  6. One can have a BMI of 22.8 and still carry fat. IOW, the person could be
skinny fat and not lean. This happens quite often with people who diet down
but don't exercise, and also with people who don't get enough protein.

"Skinny fat"? That might happen, but I suspect it's rare - it would require
a sedentary lifestyle, combined with an agressive diet, and most folks I
know at 22.8 are not sedentary.

Look here, Gary-I am skinny-fat. I hope the pic helps, it's not full body.
But you can clearly see the lack of muscle definition, and the pudgy cheeks.

Links to pictures? And, height/weight stats? Are they really around 22.8
BMI? Do you have any data on what their body fat percentages actually are,
or are you just assigning the "skinny fat" label based on your own
prejudices? Or, perhaps you're just jealous??

Do you have this same problem? Is that why you can't understand?

LOL - hardly. I currently weigh about what I did in high school (at 6' tall
and 167 lbs my BMI is 22.6). According to my latest measurements, my Body
Fat is around 11%. Not bad for a 52-year old. Here's a pic from a few days
    ago: http://www.shastasoftware.com/CycliStats/biketours/BTC2005/BTC120.htm

And a better one from last year when I was cycling in France (and weighed
about 5 lbs more than I do now):
    http://www.shastasoftware.com/CycliStats/biketours/TDF2004/TDF2004_013.htm

FWIW, last week I participated in the Bicycle Tour of Colorado - 475 miles,
with 31,000 feet of climbing. One day during the ride, I averaged 21.7 mph
for 105 miles with 5400' of climbing - my fastest "century" ever. This
Saturday, I'll be doing the Markleeville "Death Ride" near Lake Tahoe - 129
miles, with 16,000 feet of climbing in a single day (roughly equivalent to a
mountainous stage of the Tour de France).

So, no...I'm not "skinny fat", whatever that means.

As for "skinny fat" being a problem...could you cite some studies that
discuss this "problem"? I've Googled for it, but find very little other
than people selling pills, or "diet and exercise secrets".

True, especially for people who exercise a lot, or people who are very tall.
But, for most folks it is a pretty decent surrogate for "fatness".

For people with BMI>30, the vast majority are clearly overly fat, not overly
    muscled.

Interesting. Your BMI is 22.3 - quite good. As for your body fat
percentage...how did you get that number?

FWIW, Dr. C. Evertt Koop states that a healthy body fat percentage for women
aged 18-39 is 21-32%. According to that, your body fat is in the healthy
    range, as is your BMI.

The fact that you feel "ewwwww" about your body fat may be due to body
dysmorphia (i.e., seeing "faults" with your body, even though it's actually
healthy and normal, if not "ripped"😉. If you're comparing yourself to
supermodels, athletes, or movie stars, you'll always be disappointed.

What's your height and weight? According to JC, there are a "lot" of
"skinny fat" people with BMI of 22.8.

I'm 5'6" and 138, Gary. No idea of my BMI, but my BF is at 27%<ewwwwww>

Interesting. Your BMI is 22.3 - quite good. As for your body fat
percentage...how did you get that number?

FWIW, Dr. C. Evertt Koop states that a healthy body fat percentage for
    women
aged 18-39 is 21-32%. According to that, your body fat is in the healthy
    range, as is your BMI.

The fact that you feel "ewwwww" about your body fat may be due to body
dysmorphia (i.e., seeing "faults" with your body, even though it's
    actually
healthy and normal, if not "ripped"😉. If you're comparing yourself to
supermodels, athletes, or movie stars, you'll always be disappointed.

Nawwww, it has more to do with the rolls I have around my waist! BF was
measured via tape measure calculations, not quite as accurate as calipers,
but acceptable until the funds for calipers come available. Not only do I
have waist rolls, but mine thighs also touch, and my face is MUCH fatter
than it used to be. 'Sides, *ripped* is my ultimate goal<LOL> I can't say
that my BMI or BF is bad for every woman, but for *me* personally, it's not
acceptable. I have always weighed around 120, and while I don't know what
my BF was, it was definitely lower than it is now! It's only since I became
so sedentary that I've gotten so flabby. Basically, that's all that
skinny-fat is. Flabby rather than fit. And normal is not an option for me,
JMHO-normal these days is waaaayy too heavy.

That's a worthy goal if you have the desire and the persistence. Just be
careful you don't go too low in BF...if you ever start menstruating
irregularly, or if it stops, that's a big warning sign that you're damaging
your health. Google the "Female Athlete Triad" to see some more scary stuff
about women who try too hard to be ripped (especially common with gymnasts,
    runners, cyclists, etc.).

Lot of truth to that...look at pictures of average Americans now vs. 50
    years ago - we've become "super-sized".

What do you think are the odds that will seriously ever be a concern
    for her?

Or for the vast majority of people?
