  1. So how do reiki, qigong, shamanic and other
traditional healers work with depressed people?

I haven't yet investigated reiki yet (but since you
are part of the universe you can't say that the
power of the universe flows through you as if the
universe was external to you but rather than maybe
you act as a focus within the universe, perhaps).
But anyway in my attempts at healing/boosting I don't
think so much in terms of energy transfer (though
there may be some) but rather tuning/linking/opening
    of pathways/etc.

So anyway, quickly for now, the main thing I
do for depresion is imagine a metal band around
the subject's head at third eye level expanding out
and at the same time I usually move my hands apart a
    little and exhale sharply.

For some subjects grounding also helps a bit,
so imagining a link from the subject's feet
and I guess base chakra to the centre of the earth.
This can relieve shakiness, possibly anxiety
and seems to connect some to earth energy flow.

And for some subjects a third thing seems to
help, basically I think of a loop rotating
around the subject at about waist level,
counterclockwises for someone born in the
northern hemisphere and I think the other
way for someone born in the southern
hemisphere, and a slightly jiggly circle
for someone born near the equator. I
visualize this rotation until I get a
base chakra area muscle click (short
    period mulabhanda) and often associated
mild kundalini buzz and always needed
    intuition that it supposedly worked.
But really I originally thought of the
loop as more of a spiral like the
celtic triple spiral thingies but lately
I have had trouble visualizing the spiral
properly so am just using a loop but
may move back to the spiral eventually.
But anwway that may help a bit with anxiety.

So basic low energy blahs may be helped by
the first one but anxious, jittery, ungrounded
depression may be helped also by the last two.
But anyway I am still learning and again would
like to know of reiki and other tips for dealing with
depression in others (for mania the grounding is important,
and for mixed/psychotic states perhaps the loop twist
    thing is important).

as far as I am concerned for my personal sulky days..
I ground thorugh the feet or when I do dry cleaning in Hatsurei-ho
also take away a handful of what I feel in my stomac -plexus and throw
down into the earth core to be recycled .. I do a lot of things before
sleeping :-) as letting all tensions away from my body and flow
doward into teh earth or imagine to be sitting on a long chair and
watch mountais .. this is especialy effective for me and I use it at
    least since 35 years
Self control helps a lot .. 3x 20 minutes running per week produces
andomorphines ?? that helps to overtake a light depression without
chemicals .. try to rest as much as posible from 10:20 pm and not
later that that ... and so on .. tehre are plenty of useful things to do

So how do reiki, qigong, shamanic and other
traditional healers work with depressed people?

In qigong and TCM, depression manifests with an imbalance/dysfunction within
an organ or a disruption to energy flow between organs.

Energy can be directed to healing a specific organ with the technique of the
"Inner Smile", among others, in which the energy of a smile is directed to
    the organ in question.

Stabilization of energy flow requires an understanding of whether the
disruption is caused by a weakness or a blockage. (Or, most likely, some
combination of the two.) Where weakness is a factor, energy flow between
the organs in question can be strengthened by pumping more energy into the
connection, and sending it in the right direction. Blockages may need to be
resolved in two stages, first removing/redirecting the excess energy that
has been trapped in the connection, and then directing soft energies past
    the blockage to erode it.

The major task of the practitioner is to determine the appropriate
combination of these techniques, taking into account a large number of
factors. (Depression caused by an invasion of cold into the heart would
have very different characteristics and treatment to a failure of the
cooling mechanisms in the bladder, for instance.)

Acupuncture, herbal techniques, tui na and other more specialized techniques
would make use of the same diagnostic and theoretical principles, but employ
    different means.

The Taoist counselling approach would not be to identify and/or eliminate
cognitive causes of distress, but rather to assist the patient to arrive at
a peaceful acceptance of their current condition. The theory behind this is
that the state of peaceful acceptance is the optimal state for the proper
operation of the bodymind's self-regulatory systems. By achieving a
peaceful acceptance of their depression, the person achieves a position from
which it is much easier to heal themselves.

It's not quite that simple; many chronically depressed people have a
difficult time getting to sleep. It may work for people that simply feel
a little `down' for a few hours or days, but not for long periods of
    depression.

As I recall, it can go in either direction in either hemisphere
because it is more dependent on shape and irregularities of the
surface where the drain is located and random disturbances in the
water than it is on coriolis effects.

    Is that right, Theo?

  9. Sorry, no.

    WAY over-simplified.

I came to internal energy studies originally because of severe clinical
depression and diagnosed as CFS (chronic Fatigue Syndrome). I was sleeping
18 hours a day to start. And when I woke up, I was just as depressed. You
wake up tired. No fun at all.

Depression is serious stuff, and the drugs that they give you are symptom
relievers. They help regulate the levels of stuff (various) in the brain,
but do nothing for whatever caused it.

Reiki can help with what caused it. Much depression that is not hormonal
(e.g., PMS-related, for instance) is due to stress: chronic, or acute, or
due to trauma, or... This overloads the fight/flight system, and you get it
stuck "on". Seratonin and other physiology all F!d up.

Reiki can help manage the stress, heal from the trauma. That is where I find
    that it really helps.

i don't know how long it's been since you lost them but i would suggest
grieving, grieving, and more grieving. allow yourself to cry and mourn the
loss. If you are feeling hopeless.. . . then *feel* it. Do not egnore your
feelings as they point in a direction that needs attention. If you do not
allow yourself to grieve, it can create more havoc that the pain you will
feel to allow yourself to experience it and let it go. It is a natural
process . . . .allow it to happen.

yes, thoughts are things and when you first arise it is important what
thoughts you entertain. Be selective. Do not allow your thoughts to run over
the top of you. .. .when you do this, you cast your fate to the wind.

    love is . . . .

That's reactive depression, which is a completely different problem from
endogenous depression. What works for one won't necessarily work for
    another.

Endogenous depression is typically accompanied by sleep disturbances,
particularly a failure to get much deep sleep. Exercise is known to
increase the proportion of deep sleep, and that *may* be one of the reasons
why exercise generally improves depression. Some antidepressants also may
exert some of their effect by improving sleep quality.

Yes, but not as if the universe was external to you, but
with you as a focus of the universe, as I said, so the
energy of the rest of the universe plus your energy flows
through you, so yes, effectively the energy of the
    universe flows through you.

Yes, that is true, but I wasn't talking about water, and
certainly when I tried to perk up Colin Hay once
reversing my loop directions seemed to work for him,
on the night of May 18, 1995. Ocean circulation,
coriolis effect in the ocean, magnetic field,
and maybe aurora stuff vary in the north and south,
and certainly facing the pole or equator in
either hemisphere the earth's rotation loop
direction varies. But anyway I tend to do some things
fairly intuitively and stick to them if they seem
to work, as long as they seem to work, and will
worry about scientific partial or full explanations
    later.

Has anyone tried my metal band visualization technique
on themselves or other(s) yet and if so did it have any
effect? For myself, on myself it can raise my mood
one notch on my personal scale of -10 to +10 where
-2 to +2 is normal range (e.g. raise it from -1, or
slightly low, to 0, or neutral). On others I think
it has maybe more effect, no Lazarus raising from major
depression yet I think but sometimes apparent shift
from badly depressed to mildly depressed, or mildy
depressed to neutral. It could have more effect if
you associate a blessing from/association with one
of your deities or one of the deities of the person
you are doing it on, or even with some round
natural object that you may not consider a deity.
(i.e. sometimes I try it without such an association
and intuit that it didn't work and have to try it
again with such an association). But anyway it could
be that my techniques may not work for others other
than me since I do have special links that nobody
else (as far as I know) alive has, though I have attempted
to pass those links on to all other humans but may
not have succeeded yet even partially. (On the
other hand others may have links and training and
experience that I do not have, and of course I intend
to continue to learn but maybe teach a little too).

That's short term depression caused by a specific event, and in your
case, sleep can alleviate it. But long-term chronic depression that
isn't related to a specific event, is a whole 'nother thing.

After an hour or of being awake, it gradually comes over me again.

Also, some forms of depression occur with hypersomnia.

  17. You might be right. I have a vague memory of also having heard the
random flow of water down a drain.
Either way water does behave the same when flowing down a drain in both
    hemispheres.
I was really questioning healing with different directional energy flow in
    different hemispheres.
I was wondering whether Reiki or other methods addresse this.
Don't atoms, electrons etc move in the same direction in both hemispheres.
Why would we send energy in one direction in one hemisphere and in the
opposite direction in the opposite hemisphere.
    Does anyone have any info.

It is not what I read and seen in TV not far than 6 months ago..

As I recall, it can go in either direction in either hemisphere
because it is more dependent on shape and irregularities of the
surface where the drain is located and random disturbances in the
water than it is on coriolis effects.

    Is that right, Theo?

Well, for one thing we may not have demonstrated that we are
sending any energy, in physics definitions of energy, or
that Reiki has anything to do with such energy or atoms or
electrons. However I am not saying that it does not work
but just that it may still be somewhat magical to us, i.e.
not explainable by current science but perhaps explainable
by more advanced science eventually. Certainly if no
flow of universal energy through a reiki practitioner to
the patient can be physically measured it can be considered
a magical invocation of the universe in some ways (even
as a deity, so if you define the universe as space and
its contents that would be my deity Cosma and if
you define the universe as all/everything that would
be my deity God [all/everything, which is all powerful
but not perfectly good, and I believe that God's
definition of love/goodness is another someone LOVE
which is perfectly good but not all powerful, and
that there cannot be a someone that is both all powerful
    and perfectly good]).

So anyway my healing/boosting working attempts are based
a little on traditional methods I have skimmed some
of so far (and may continue to learn from later) and
the very little I have read so far of modern scientific
tests to try and confirm such methods, and certainly
somewhat on my own theories, intuition and trial and
error. So far for me such room loop reversal (opposite
to what Wiccans do) from north to south and also
reversal of indivual loops for individuals born in
north and south regardless of where they are, seems
to be working but I may be deluded. I'll worry about
explaining this a bit more scientifically in the future
with science, local and global geomancy, and
biomagicoenergetic theories of various sorts including
my own. But again keep in mind that we are often
talking about "energy" and not energy and much of it
may not be much energy but tuning through consciousness overlap
and focusing and symbolic connections within the earth
and universe, e.g. But I must head off now and may
have more comments later or tomorrow though I have a
huge amount of work to do in the next six weeks so
am gradually pulling off most newsgroups but will stay
on alt.music.s-mclachlan and some local ones perhaps.

But what scientific studies have there been demonstrating
actual physical energy flow in bioenergetic work,
especially at a distance, or if not that, at least
double blind study healing effects, and in either
case acceptible to those on sci.skeptic? I'll worry
about testing my own methods later but suspect they
work at least a bit and thus those of others may also
work some beyond just belief/placebo/attention effects,
and I'm sure some good research has been done in Asia
    on the subject.

    Barry, I have similar questions.

You will find a lot of variation in practioners of just about any
    method, I imagine.

That said, Reiki is not usually concerned with diagnosing and
prescribing in the same way that TCM or Western medicine is. You
simply apply Reiki until the feeling of flow slows down, then move on
to the next position. The idea is that the body (or mind or spirit)
will take exactly what it needs and no more, so that ideally (ie when
you're not pressed with time constraints) you stay in a given position
until the correct balance is reached. It is neither necessary nor
desirable to figure out a particular direction of energy movement and
to work with or against it. Some schools of Reiki use a technique for
developing intution so that the hands move, seemingly of their own
volition, to just the right place for maximum effect right at the
outset, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for a whole body
treatment. This intuitional effect seems to be self-developing even in
those who don't use the technique, although it may be slower in
    developing.

Anyways, point is, Reiki is not so concerned with specific directional
manipulations of the energy, so this business of which way does the
energy go in which hemisphere really does not apply to Reiki.

Perhaps it is applicable in other methods?

I personally don't see any reason for it, but perhaps this sort of
specific visualization helps the original poster focus his intent
better? I don't see that it would necessarily do any harm, but don't
see that it is necessarily helpful for someone else to use the same
    visualization.

    IMO, of course.

Good post Nick, you've come a long way. Are you practicing Qigong these days
    or more Taoism in general?
Sorry for asking but I've never seen you post here before.
