pharmaceutical companies charge for certain medications, even though
those companies have billions of R & D charges and only a limited patent
life to recoup them, but don't even blink at the outrageous prices of

'cause all too often their patients come in and demand "that medication
they saw in the ad on TV" when it may not be appropriate, or they've

And just why are the same meds so much less expensive in Canada? They
don't allow TV advertising of prescription medications in Canada, so
clearly all the marketing is jacking up the prices to a certain extent.

As I said. No good data. That data is very preliminary. I can't even get
the article. It is in a Polish journal I've never heard of. It doesn't
even appear to be the same enzyme therapy Dr. Kelley pushes; so this

I doubt that's the primary factor. Advertisements on TV for prescription
medications are a rather recent phenomenon, only having appeared in the
last decade or so. In fact, the guidelines for drug advertising were
only revised to explicitly allow TV advertisements in 1997, although it
had been going on a few years before that.

Not true. U.S. TV stations reach all Canadians through a scientific miracle
called cable. The drug company commercials reach the Canadian market just
the same as they reach the U.S. The medications are cheaper in every country
other than the U.S. because our "medical establishment" refuses to prescribe
them at silly prices. The markup is not on account of the costv of getting a
DIN number, or for advertising, it is because of price gouging. This is the
reason that the drug companies won't market anything that they can't patent.
They don't want any competition. This is the same reason they don't want to
give any credibility to such powerful health boosters such as ginseng. They
can't compete on any level with ginseng and they can't sell it for
exorbitant
profits, so they attempt to squash it.

[censored]. You manage to sell Ginseng for nearly $300 for a 150 g tin of
the powder. I'm sure the pharmaceutical companies could find a way to
charge at least that much for it if they wanted to.

As I said, there's no *good* scientific evidence. The below is a pilot
study, published in an obscure Polish journal that I can't even get a
hold of to evaluate the quality of the article. (And before you try to
claim I am denigrating it because it's from Poland, most of my family
came from Poland and I'd actually be very happy if the study were better
than it is.) From the abstract, I can't even tell how many patients were
in the study, what the randomization criteria were, what the endpoints
were, how they were measured, etc., etc. Some, if not all, of these
things can usually be summarized in a 250-word abstract.

Actually, depending on the specific chemotherapy regimen, it might not
be cheaper, or the difference in price may not be as large as you think.
If you posted a question to sci.med.diseases.cancer, there are some
oncologists who are regulars there who might be able to tell you. Older
chemotherapy drugs, many of which are still in use for common cancers,
are cheaper than you would think. Also, most chemotherapy is not given
every day. It's given either weekly or once every two or three weeks.
