  1. Ok, more questions

    1) Shaving/cutting hair. -- in the summer i have my hair vut to about 1/4
inch long. Should i let it grow longer? should i keep it this lenght? Should
    I shave it off?

    2) swim cap -- Currently because of the lenght of my hair, i do not use a
cap. i have a latex and a silicone one. shoudl i use one? Which one? They
    are both comfortable...

    3) errr.. uhm... -- Obviously urinating, just go, but what about the
other.... how many hours before my swim should i stop eating so that i dont
have to worry about solid stuff?

    4) the day before -- What should I eat and drink? what should I not eat or
drink? What should I do? what should i not do?

    Thanks,

    Micheal

  2. A cap will help retain some body heat and, especially if you use a bright
one (I like the day-glo orange or yellow), you will be more visible to
    others, including boats.

If you're at all worried about the cold get a neoprene cap.

Your cap will be more comfortable with short hair.

I wouldn't eat heavy meals, ie fat, for a day or two before the swim,
but I would eat lots of pasta or rice. Everybody has their own
    regimen.

See above. Don't eat or drink things the evening before that will
disturb sleep. ie no caffeine, asparthame, etc. Don't eat a lot of
    fat. Eat complex carbs.

You really should work out this mental problem you have, before you do
    the swim.

  8. Micheal, do yourself a big favour don't do this swim before you have done a
lot more pool and openwater swimming, you have a lot of questions which I'm
sure you will have answers for when and only when you are READY for such a
swim. At the moment you are trying to take shortcuts which could lead to bad
    things.

I have been swimming races for just over a year now and did my first 5500m
swim about a week ago in a POOL. Beleive me I felt it. After 5km there is
not a shoulder musle that doesn't know what you are up to and they do reply.
A good strech after was all that helped. You sound like a complete novice at
this, If you want to hurt yourself go for it but do it in a pool first where
you can still stand up if you know you are in trouble, walk a bit even rest
    and then only go on.
Yes you have friends on the boat alongside you but it only takes one cup of
water to drown an inexperienced swimmer, and a lapse of concentration from
your to friends on the boat and you are fish food.

Some probably did, but most of them probably trained for their race by
swimming a lot of hard workouts, maybe 50k per week for several months
before the race, and they had years and years of distance training as
a foundation, so they had reason to believe they could complete their
    chosen distance. You don't, yet.

    I haven't swam English Channel but I swam Lake St-John (32k & 40k, Canada),
Lake Memphremagog (42k, Canada), Atlantic City Around-the-Island Swim (36k,
    US), Hernandarias-Parana (88k down a river, Argentina), + many other 15k &
more races. I was training mainly in pool (7-11 x per week) + few training
in open water at the beginning of the summer or when I was in training camp
in Florida (3-4 open water swim per week). Longest distance non-stop in pool
was 20k (I did it 3-4 times, usually once a year) but regular session in
pool were between 8-13k. Highest milleage for a week was 140k (11
trainings). Average was probably between 60-75k.

  15. Suddenly I feel like an amateur, I do my 20 -30km a week, that is the time I
have available and that is mostly @ 5 in the morning and then twice a week I
put in a double shift one in the morning and one in the late after noon. Is
swimming all you guys do? How much do you do Micheal, anything remotely
close to this that can validate your ability to do the 8 km. Here is a real
chalenge for you Micheal, I asked for a couple of hard sessions on this
site, work them and reply to them, there is some nice ones in there.
Then from my side I will commit to swimming that 8km the same day you do in
a dam or lake in my area, it's winter here now thus if you are fast to do
this you can make me suffer for putting you through this. We can set a date
and the GMT time and we can swim @ the same time. Anyone else want to join
in, we make it a global race. You record your time and enter it here and we
know who wins, what do you get: nothing just have some fun, this leaves
nobody with a reason to lie about their times. Any one interested?

    I haven't swam English Channel but I swam Lake St-John (32k & 40k,

    Canada),

At the time I was swimming, I was a student at university. I was swimming
from 5:30 to 7:30 or 8:00 (am) and from 15h30 to 18:30. Depending of the
season, the training could be shorter or few time longer. As soon the
classses were over, I was just swimming.
