Joined a running club recently hoping to join some group runs
occassionally. Group runs offset low motivation, atleast IMHO.
Membership doesn't cost much and the newsletters are fairly good.
Anyways, there was a post in the club mailing list that there would
be a group run this morning - a trail run at that. So I made plans
and headed to the meeting place. No one else showed up. I wasn't
upset since it wasn't something I wasn't prepared for. Running isn't
a team sport unlike soccer, basketball etc. You can run alone and
at times that suit you.
So I will get back to running by myself. My only concern is with the
solitude. While solitude in trails can be soothening, it can also
be eerily disconcerting - just the fear of the unknown or more than
that. I recently bought a book written by a local trail runner who
ran on local trails for more than 20 years. While he advocated trail
running in the book and listed a handful of local trails, he also
cautioned against "critters" (wild pigs etc) and on rare occassions
unpleasant encounters with gangs.
I am not worried about bears in these areas (central coast of CA).
Bears are found fairly commonly in High Sierras, but not over here.
But I am worried somewhat about the rare possible encounter with a
mountain lion. The author of the book mentioned that he came across
a mountain lion just once and then he chose to risk running towards
it rather than away from it. I can't tell what I might do if that
happens to me.
Nevertheless it is a risk I'll have to take if I wish to train on
trails. Pray for me.
