I am not on a low-carb diet. I did not come here claim I was. I came here
because I asked a simple question. I'm eating two foods that are seemingly
unhealthy. One seemed to encourage weightloss or maintenance, the other did
not. To those that responded with helpful information, I really appreciate
it. I intend to do some more reading on the subject. Again, if anyone has
any good books I'd appreciate it.

What I did not expect however, was to be lit into like I was, and I'm really
perplexed. I'm not a troll. I did not say that what I was eating was healthy
or recommend it. I merely told you what I have experienced in the past year.
Why is there so much hostility? You can have a different experience and
    disagree politely you know.

One day, I may want to try the Atkins or some other low-carb plan, and I
would like a supportive forum. But I find that often, and this forum is
certainly not alone, there is a lot of vitriol. Why? It really discourages
me. I may stick around, and I thank those that have made me feel welcome,
but otherwise I haven't found a lot of "support" here or even common
    decency.

I think that is essential to a diet. Like the fellow that queried about
low-carb bread and got ripped into because it was "fast food". Well, as you
all know not all fast foods are created equal, and in fact, at some
independent places, it's perfectly reasonable to eat healthily.

I don't know. I'm very discouraged at this point. I am a fat ass, I never
    said I wasn't. I just don't understand it. Whatever.

Again, thank you to those that offered interesting info and a nice welcome.
I'm sure you'll probably brand me a troll for sure now. But my story is true
and it just makes the effort to find an answer all the more difficult.

For one thing you had the misfortune to attract the
attention of one of our (worst) resident trolls and made the
mistake of trying to reason with it.

You may note that you DID get a lot of good information along with
criticism from a few jerks. I'd suggest you simply killfile those. ;-)

I've already suggested a couple of books in another post. Look for them
    on Amazon.com.

Usenet is like this! There are good, helpful people and there are jerks
that get off on being cruel to people. I learned to live with it and
    learned to ignore it. ;-)

For pity sakes don't take it personally!
Develop a thick skin and party on dude.

    Cheers and welcome to Usenet!

If the things people type in newsgroups are enough to keep you from
losing weight, then, and I say this in the nicest way possible, you are
probably not going to be successful if and when you do decide to lose
weight. Completely changing your lifestyle to become a healthier person
can be hard work, and if you let comments from strangers derail you
before you even start, that indicates you don't have the strength to
deal with the inevitable difficulties in losing weight.

  8. I think you got some of the responses you did because a lot of your
intital post made little sense. You claim to lose or maintain weight
while eating tacos, but gain weight while eating spaghetti. Are these
the only two foods that you eat? It's hard to imagine controlling
everything else and having these as the only two variables and doing it
long enough to determine that it is working that way. Then you said
you were not on LC, only adding more protein to your diet to balance
out the carbs. That makes no sense either, as it means you have a diet
that is now still full of excess carbs and more calories from protein
too. And then finally you said something about possibly burning as
many calories cooking food as it contains, which is totally off the
    wall.

  9. : I think you got some of the responses you did because a lot of your
: intital post made little sense.

Bingo! and now he is claiming "One seemed to encourage weightloss or
    maintenance, the other did
not." Such illogical thinking is what got him into his fix in the first
place. Food does not "encourage weight loss".

So, the entire post comes out as "I am really illogical and have no clue as
to what I am doing with regards to food--but if you disagree with me, I will
get "hurt" and wonder what I have done to have people disagree with my
    irrational thinking!"

Education. Education. Education. Not supposing that some foods "encourage
weight loss" or that you can "cancel" out the food you eat simply by
standing up as you cook it!

  15. Well, getting appropriate education isn't all that easy. Supposedly
knowledgable dieticians are still pushing the low fat line. The truth is
that the consensus in this group is still very far from mainstream thinking.
Change is coming though. Last year when I told my doctor that I was low
carbing she was concerned and asked me a bunch of questions, told me to be
careful. This year when I told her I would like a copy of my blood work and
mentioned that most low carbers found they had improved cholesterol she
    replied that she knew that.

  16. If everyone ignored the naysayers and posted real support and good
suggestions the overall tone of the group would change. I know it's hard
not to get sucked into verbal duels, I can't resist throwing a zinger now
and then, but it just brings down the level of discourse when people go on
for paragraph after paragraph of complaint about another person.
