Could SEVEN be possible? No one would surpass it in our lifetimes, I believe- or, perhaps, ever.

  6. When did he win his fifth?

At this point, the question is best asked of six, which would be unprecedented.

Let's start with five. I think he'll win this year, especially with Beloki out. Next year, provided
he even participates, will be very very tough though.

Is it possible for Armstrong to win Seven Tours de France? Yes. Is it likely? No.

It is tempting to think that Armstrong would be keen to continue on if he were to win a 6th Tour.
Moreover, one might think that he would dispense with race tactics to some degree, in an attempt
to dominate by sheer power, a la Eddy Merckx. It would be nice to see Armstrong to make a
maximalist effort to win more stages.

However, if and when he wins his 6th TDF, he might decisde to rest on his laurels of having set
    the record for most victories.

Armstrong ought to consider going for some victories in the Giro d' Italia, and La Vuelta de
Espania. Getting wins in the other two Grand Tours would certainly round out his accomplishments.

Anything is possible. It's really very unlikely as you say. 32 is the turning point for cyclists
with non fo the super champs (Merckx, Hinault, Indurain) winning in their 32nd year. Lance IS in his
    32nd year.

There is real question if Lance can do six tdf's now. My guess is proably no. Lance is not riding
from a position of strength this year. We have yet to see a really major attack on Lances part so
far. Indurains & Hinault were quite a bit stronger than Lance this year when they won their 5th tdf.
I would be wiliing to bet that Lance will retire after this season.

Indurain rode the mountain stages much in the same fashion that LANCE did (not able to drop
everyone, but able to keep others in check).

There hasn't been an ITT yet. That's where we will see how vulnerable (or not) LANCE really is.

No, Indurain almost single-handedly chased down Zulle and put nearly 2 minutes on his competition.
Indurain rode at the very front of the pack on several flat stages early in the tour. Indurain also
broke away on the Charleroi - Liège stage.

Indurain rode away a few times, but the majority of the time his style was to ride conservatively in
the mountains. He never did win a road stage the same year he won the overall (although he should
have in Stage 9 of 1995).

Yes but Indurain never rode like Armstring did between 1999 and 2003 in the mountains, i.e. beating
everyone. Indurain used to control his opponents like Armstrong is doing this year.

That is the point. This year LANCE is riding in the manner of Indurain.

The 1994 mountain stage to Hautacam was another stage he probably should have won. It reminded me of
Miguel's 1990 stage win to Luz Ardiden where Lemond was too focused on GC to set himself up for the
    stage win.

I can't think of any GC winners in the past 20 years that have won stages from small groups (for
    just that reason).

LANCE, Riis, Pantani, Ullrich, all in the last 10 years won the GC and won mountain stages solo.

Indurain couldn't do it because he couldn't (or wouldn't) ride every single other rider off his
wheel. His strategy was more conservative.

Hinault didn't seem strong at all when he won his 5th TDF. Just because LA didn't attack in the
Alps doesn't mean that he won't make a break in the Pyranees. Speculating that Armstrong is
washed up, is kind of silly, before he has had even a chance to ride the first ITT.

If LA wins his 5th TDF this year, there is no way that he will retire before taking a stab at
    winning the record 6th.

Armstrong has had to overcome a virus, record heat during the 1st half of the tour, the effects
of several crashes (stemming back to the Dauphine Libre). Maybe he is running scared; maybe he
has lost some strength. One thing is for sure: everything will be clear by the end of the 2nd
ITT next week. Frankly, I think that it is more likely that LA will have a lead of 7-10
minutes, than it is that Ulrich, Vino, or Mayo will overtake him.
