Shimagnolo 8 to 10-speed conversion (Ping Peter)

Question 1:
Do I need to get a 10-speed chain? I remember seeing somewhere that 9sp
SRAM chains work well with C10.

Use a 10s chain(assuming the casette is a 10s, not a shimano 9s).
Mavic/Wipperman, Campagnolo. If the cogset is shimano 9s, use a 9s
chain. Yes, early 10s chains with the permalink were bad. I have used a
105 level shimano chain on 10s and it did work. A wee bit nosy, but it
worked.

No problem. Asd a matter of fact, Campag pulleys are marked 9-10. No
need to change anything regardless of what brand=ford says.

Yes w/o problem. Use a shimano 10s chain. less noise once again cuz the
chain/cogs are close together.

Nope it won't I don't care what anybody says. It will 'shift' kinda but
not really. Use a Campag rear derailleur.

yes w/o proble\m. The very first 10s setup I installed had a 1995
Athenra rear derailleur and crank. Number 2 was onto a DA 8s system,
both worked just fien. 10s rings are not thinner, just a wee bit closer
together.

I was not successful in getting perfect shifts through the range using
either a IRD or Connex 10 chain. However, if you are fortunate to
have a pre 2001 Campy rear derailleur, you'll shift the Shimano
cassette dead on. I am using Centaur 10 x Record 8 Rear derailleur x
Shimano 10 Ultegra 12/27 on my long ride (double centuries) bike. I
only do that because I like the 12/27 x 10sp range with my 50/34 that
Shimano offers and Campy doesn't. Prior to that setup, I was using a
13/26 x 10sp Campy cassette. My first attempt with a Shimano 10
wasn't satisfactory until I learned that using the older rear
derailleur made it work.

Don't get this. I just set up a few Campag ERGO/rear der with shimano
10s wheels and chain and it worked fine and dandy.

shimano 10s is closer to Campag 10s in spacing than with shimano 9s and
that works ok also. No need to search for an old rera deraileur.

You are usually right. Which chain do you use for shifting the
Shimano cassette?

You are usually right. Which chain do you use for shifting the
Shimano cassette?

I match the shimano 10s cogset with a shimano 10s chain for the best
results. It is the thinnest of the lot.
