I was thinking of moving from 9 speed to 10 speed and I have a newish set of Bontrager Race X Lites that I like a lot and don't want to replace. Does 10 speed have the same cassette width as 9? Can I just swap 10 out for 9 and keep the wheels?

This is a new bike your talking about isn´t it ? because if your just wanting to change group from 9 to 10 speed then your potty . Save your money and put it towards a new bike that has 10 speed .
ps why do you want to spend all that money just to get 1 gear more ? and a system that is more difficult to keep set up and will need more maintainance as well as reducing chain life .
nb some older frames may not have the correct geometry to work well with 10 speed systems - it´s a small difference but can be quite noticable in it´s effects . -
well, all this kinda stuff is fragile, you know, so just as as long as the team does not break 100% of everything with a single pedal stroke, then yeah.
10 spd shimano comes with a shimano shim to allow backwards compatibility.

Same goes w/shoes, etc. Or spend that money on a custom frame built to your exact proportions 😉 That 10speed stuff is over-rated......... 9 speed works just fine

I ride a titanium frame. Unlike the aluminum and carbon fiber I don't need to change my bike out like dirty underware.
With titanium you can buy a frame and then over the 10-15-20-more years that you ride it you can upgrade the components as they wear out.
My concern wasn't the frame but the wheels. I am riding Bontrager Race X Lites and wanted to make sure the rear wheel would accept the 10sp cassette.
Unless someone knows where I can get an 18 tooth cog for 9 speed. The 19 to 17 jump is really bugging me.

This is totally non-sense. I have a 1980s vintage selle italia titanium rail seat. It works great.
I'm sick of the 19 to 17 tooth jump and I don't want to lose my 12 cog cause' I'm a sprinting animal.

A 12/21 9-speed cassette should do the trick.

Unlike educated scientists and engineers, you know nothing about materials, science, or whatever else that requires any sort of deductive reasoning or adherence to scientific method.
There's one law that can't be violated, that blows your inbred arguments out of the water: S=k*ln(omega). Look it up. When you boil it down, it says that nothing lasts forever. Of course, for you to boil it down, you'll have to understand systems, energy, energy states, and what entropy is......so I guess that means you won't be able to boil it down.
As for aluminum and CF, your understanding of their material properties is as deep as Jessica Simpson's understanding of the difference between tuna and chicken. Heck, if F-16 pilots had your vaulted knowledge of CF, I bet they'd be afraid to get in their aircraft....heck they might even go on strike. I bet if the aircraft industry had the secret knowledge you possess of CF and aluminum, they'd be screaming to have all those airplanes made with CF and Al grounded, decertified, and chopped into bits so that they wouldn't suddenly fail, as apparently those materials do, and kill tens of thousands of innocents that should have been in 100% Ti or Cro-Mo aircraft.
I guess those CF compressor blades for jet engines that were tested in a lab in which I worked and that showed superior performance were really just stealthy harbingers of disaster.
It's too bad we all can't have a little of the knowledge booty that you must have in giant vats around your intellectual palace. I can only imagine that your intellectual stores will only explode in number once you graduate high school. I gotta say, I've disagreed w/ more than a few people on this BBS and others re: some technical or theoretical issues, but at least those people--to a man, to a woman, or to a hermaphrodite--brought some technical knowledge and deductive skills to the table and were worthy of respect. Man, you just bring up something that tastes alot like bile.

Are you an educated scientist or engineer? If so, I would think you know the differences in properties between a cf bike frame and a f-16. The f-16 is loaded with kevlar the bike is not. The strength of carbon alone is not even close to supporting the stress an f-16 endures. Without the kevlar added the aircraft would fall apart. (for those of you that do not know what kevlar is, it is an extremely strong and light fibre, normally used in making bullet proof vests).
Don't compare a bike to an f-16.
You also mention you worked in a lab testing compressor blades. Would that facility be TPI Technology....just curious! -

Don't compare a bike to an f-16.Educated as both. And my point wasn't that an F-16 is soley CF but that it's patently stupid to assume that something has a particular reliability/strength/etc. just because it is made w/ Material X. There is enough CF in aerospace products that it's sufficient to say that given the right design, CF is plenty damned good.

No, actually the blades were being tested in the same lab....on the same damned optical bench.....where my research was. I lent a hand now and again, prepping compressor blades and other aerospace bits, but my research was along a different line. The facility was NASA GRC.

You can make frame and component parts out of it that would have pretty good impact and abrasion resistance, but because of the low specific modulus they would end up weighing a ton.el Inglés said:

Not really. Ti has a specific cutting energy that's lower than most high strength steel and nickel alloys. It has some issues with heat buildup, but they're manageable. Under the right conditions, it machines pretty easily. -

Apparently working with this stuff produces some nasty waste (according to a frame builder in another forum). That no doubt adds to the cost.I was suprised when I read somewhere how abundant this stuff is in the environment.
