Thanks!
Wipperman chains are closed with a snaplink. Use it.
Shimano chain pins are available in multiple packs from several
sources. Shimano recommends that you use them only with Shimano
chains, obviously. (I don't want to find out if they're right about
any potential problem.)
As for Campy, there's an expert reply already posted with which I
heartily agree.
For any chain that it will work with (which is a lot more of them than
the maker admits), the SRAM Powerlink is the best solution in my
opinion.
Regardless of which chain you use, if there's a snaplink available
that will function with it, I recommend that you carry a spare.
Well, I guess I owe you all the long story. I had my chain off to clean
it on a Saturday night, before a pretty important early Sunday morning
ride. When I was re-assembling it, the chain slipped out of my hand.
The derailleur under tension slung the chain, and flicked the Wipperman
quick connect pieces across the garage, and I could only find one half.
So, I had a small section of Wipperman chain, and salvaged my ride by
pressing the pin out, and putting it back in. About 300 miles later, I
had nearly forgotten about it, and the stupid thing broke. We used a 9sp
Shimano pin someone had, and it held to get me back to civilization.
Now, I have a $50 chain that could break at any second.
So, I really need a couple of 10sp Wipperman "repair pins" to fix the
chain right, and I need a new quick connect.
And, I have an extra Campy chain that has about 2k miles on it, that I
guess I could put an SRAM connector on, to keep as a spare.
I also have a 9sp on my touring bike. I may get a couple of the SRAM
links to keep in my repair kit. Nothing is worse than being stuck way
out on a country road with a broken chain, or a broken "anything" for
that matter!
Thanks for everyone's comments.
