  1. Hi, all--- I recently bought one of those "meat plans"---three cases of
frozen high quality beef, pork and seafood.

Sooooooo....if there was ever a logical time to try Atkins....I guess
    it's...gulp! now....?

But...but...but.....even tho Ive seen friends lose weight...Im still
scared of cholesterol. HOW can a lots-o-meat diet NOT raise my (already
    too high) cholesterol?

IF Im understanding right, Im supposed to eat meat, even
butter...egss....cheese and basically salad-type veggies and NOTHING
    else?

and....I wont fall over dead of a heart attack in a week or two?

I guess I just dont get it...HOW the (*&^%^& can one eat so much meat
(even the dreaded RED kind!) and not get into cholesterol probs?

also...how LONG does the craving for sugar/flour goodies take to go
    away?

    scared but strangely intrigued....

    ~WIR~

  2. So stay fat then.

Because cholesterol has not a whole lot to do with what you eat. High
cholesterol is because your liver is happily turning it out. Most of what
you eat on an Atkins-type diet is salad or veggies - I didn't increase my
meat consumption by much, if any, but Boy! am I eating more veggies.

About half a day, for me, for most things - specific triggers are still
there, and must be avoided, but I'm even back to buying the kids things like
chocolate muffins : ) I enjoy a tasty, varied menu now, and I really don't
    miss too much at all.

Buy the book, and read it. Seriously. There's so many preconceptions out
there about Atkins, and so much press discussion, that it feels like you
know what it's about already - but you don't. It's actually a very strong,
subtle, well-thought-out plan to get you eating a really healthy diet that
you can stick to for the rest of your life.

What have you got to lose? Go for it!

A few people are sensitive to, either saturated fat or something else in red
meat and that makes their LDL go up. Most people are not sensitive, I'll
bet way more people are carbohydrate intolerant than are saturated fat
intolerant. If you are really worried about it, olive oil goes good with a
lot of things and is known to lower LDL and raise HDL, along with nuts,
olives, oily fish, and avocado. Avoid trans fats as much as possible, they
aren't good for anyone. Get your tests redone after you've been on the
diet for a while and you will most likely see an improvement.
There are studies that might make you feel better about it.
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15553308
CONCLUSION: The addition of a low-carbohydrate diet for overweight patients
with known coronary artery disease undergoing stable statin therapy causes
significant weight loss and a favorable change in the lipid panel.
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15148064
CONCLUSION: Participants on a low-carbohydrate diet had more favorable
overall outcomes at 1 year than did those on a conventional diet. Weight
loss was similar between groups, but effects on atherogenic dyslipidemia and
glycemic control were still more favorable with a low-carbohydrate diet
after adjustment for differences in weight loss.
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15148063
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with a low-fat diet, a low-carbohydrate diet program
had better participant retention and greater weight loss. During active
weight loss, serum triglyceride levels decreased more and high-density
lipoprotein cholesterol level increased more with the low-carbohydrate diet
    than with the low-fat diet.

You know the amount recommended is probably more veggies than most people,
who aren't dieting, eat, don't you? You might be surprised how little meat
you end up eating, because you won't get as hungry.

My cholesterol GREATLY improved with Atkins. Mine was also too high before
    I started Atkins.

    Of course not.
Eating cholesterol does not make you have high cholesterol. Eating green
foods does not turn you green. And eating fat definitely does not make you
fat (this one is really important).

    Quoted message said:

See what I typed above. Also, it would be good for you to read the book so
that you approach this correctly and follow all the rules.

    Quoted message said:

also...how LONG does the craving for sugar/flour goodies take to go away?

A few days. A week at the most. You stick strictly to the induction
allowed foods list and before the end of the first week you'll experience
this fantastic lack of appetite and self control when it comes to food.

Atkins is not necessarily a high meat plan. Only in induction (which is
just 2 weeks) does it possibly resemble high meat. After that, with your
appetite reduction, you will likely not be eating all that high quantities
    of meat.
I, like many other low carbers, eat far more veggies now that I'm on Atkins
than I ever have before in my life. I cut out sugar and processed foods and
added more vegetables... how is that unhealthy?

    Good luck.

I strongly suggest that you buy and read the Atkins book.

You currently have a distorted idea of what this stuff is all about.

Most people get tired of explaining this diet to people who won't read
and are full of .... crummy diet ideas.

You can go to the Atkins site and read much of the book there, but many
find reading the screen tiring, and it is hard to take notes in the
    margins of the screen.

Others have addressed that, so I'll skip that part because I didn't
have any of my levels checked beforehand and I feel GREAT now. Let me
put it this way: Before I started Atkins, I felt like [censored] ALL THE
TIME and I truly thought I was going to DIE. After being on Atkins for
a while, I had a ray of hope; after being on it for about 6 months, I
felt like I had a new lease on life because I felt SOOO much better.
THAT is what keeps me low-carb. Looking goods comes and goes, but
    FEELING good is PRICELESS!

    Quoted message said:

IF Im understanding right, Im supposed to eat meat, even
butter...egss....cheese and basically salad-type veggies and NOTHING
    else?

You can eat LOTS of different kinds of veggies, depending on their carb
counts. You need to avoid some veggies such as potatoes, peas, etc.,
but there are lots of others you can eat. You can eat a lot of meat or
not (at least at first). I'm not a big meat eater, so while I
increased my meat/fish/poultry intake, that's not saying much when one
lives mostly on high-carb [censored] and frozen dinners. I almost never ate
vegetables then either, so, TRUST ME, Atkins was WAAAAY healthier for
ME. I eat a moderate amount of meat now -- probably not as much as I
SHOULD since I tend to use it more as an additive to other dishes.

Atkins is fairly strict for the first TWO WEEKS. During that time, you
keep your daily carbs at 20 and eat only what is listed on the
acceptable foods list for Induction (no fruit or nuts, for instance).
After that, you can add back many foods while increasing your daily
carb level by 5 more carbs for a week, then do it again, etc., until
you reach a point where you are no longer losing or are knocked out of
ketosis. Then you level off at about 5 carbs lower than that high
    point.

    Quoted message said:

Not unless you were going to ANYWAY.

    Quoted message said:

also...how LONG does the craving for sugar/flour goodies take to go
    away?

It's different for different people, but mostly they go away by day 3
    or 4.

As others have advised, get the book. If you can, try to get the Dr.
Atkins New Diet Revolution book published around 2001 -- newer ones are
produced by Atkins Nutritionals, which is NOT part of the Atkins
Foundation -- they include low-carb Atkins products during Induction
which were never intended by Dr. Atkins to be used during the first two
weeks and which are NOT necessary to this way of eating unless you WANT
to get them. They did this after his death, and their motives are
somewhat suspicious since they are trying to sell you something. I'm
not saying they are BAD, just that they are not promoting the "purer"
way of eating (WOE) as it was originally intended. It's much better to
get a firm handle on the new WOE before venturing off into low-carb-
manufactured-product-land because those foods can throw you off.

My view on weight loss is (first and foremost) that you have to be
READY to do it -- if you aren't ready to commit to it, it's less likely
to succeed. If you ARE ready, jump in with both feet. Keep reading
and posting here for GREAT support, info and inspiration and ignore the
trolls (JC der Koenig is the resident [censored] -- he WILL insult you if
    he hasn't already).

    ~WIR~

I'll reiterate what others here have said. The common concept of a low-carb
lifestyle being all about meat, cheese, eggs, and so on is a complete myth.
In fact, it's more about healthy choices and portions regarding fruits,
nuts, and vegetables. But because Dr. Atkins focused on these, and said
that fat is stored carbs and not an issue with regard to weight gain or
loss, many people decided that meant he was saying that it was okay to eat
nothing but non- or low-carb foods of their choice.

This is where the books that everyone is talking about will come in handy
explaining it to you, as well as providing a lot of good recipes for
low-carb healthy meals during the initial stages of the low-carb transition.

It took me a few days to lose my craving for potatoes and milk, and so on.
I now, a year later, eat these foods maybe once a week and don't worry about
it. But each person is different.

    ~WIR~

Sorry. I meant to say that Dr. Atkins didn't consider the meats, cheeses,
egss, and so on a major issue regarding weight loss or gain, and didn't
    really focus on these.

A low-carb lifestyle is not about tanking up on the beef, pork, and seafood
that you have bought. Nor is it about just butter and salad veggies.

It's more about realizing that your body fat is stored fuel, and the human
body uses carbohydrates for fuel. And you should never sacrifice nutrition
    for weight loss.

That's why the books are important. They tell you what foods are best to
eat for maximum nutrition and minimum carb intake.

Doesn't mean you can't ever have a candy bar or a pint of ice cream again,
you can. All you want. But by becoming more aware of how your body
processes what you eat, you will learn more about how different foods impact
your body. And that's about it.
