I took my Deore crankset to bits in order to give the rings a good clean and degrease, however when I came to rebuild it I realised I didn't know how the rings were formally aligned relative to each other. All I could do was take an educated guess and line up the engraved inscriptions where it says 'Shimano HG 22T' etc. I want to know if this is the correct rotation, because the shift ramps and shaped teeth won't line up if I've guessed wrong. Obviously I knew how the big ring is meant to be positioned but that still leaves 16 combinations for the other two!

Wait, doesn't that just leave four? out/out out/in in/out in/in assuming small/big rings.

Forgot to mention that i checked the exploded view pdf for the Deore chainset from the Shimano web site and was not able to tell how they aligned...

There's usually small arrowhead (or somesuch similar) markings on each ring (on the sets I've seen). These all line up to each other, and on my set, all line up to the middle of the crank arm.
I don't know about theShimano Deore set specifically, but would think they'd have something the same or similar - take a look!

I mean rotational alignment, i know which way each one faces. 4 bolt system on 3 rings gives 16 combos i reckon.

The only inscription i could see was the shimano stuff as mentioned. I was expecting to see arrows or something. Perhaps I'll look again.

The big ring is self evident because of the chain catcher attached to it that goes under the crank arm. The granny gear can't go on wrong so that just leaves the middle ring. Place that one so that the shift pins do not coincide directly with the shift pins on the large ring. -- _________________________ Chris Phillipo - Cape Breton, Nova Scotia ramsays-online.comramsays-online.comOpen ↗

On the Shimano rings that I've used, there's a tab sticking down in the cutout that should align with the crank (XT / XTR -- don't know about Diore, but would expect it to be the same).
BTW. it DOES make a difference on the granny unless the number of teeth evenly divides into the number of arms.

I have just spent ages analysing my chainrings and stumbled across the tabs before reading this! Middle ring was by chance mounted correctly and have now correctly aligned the granny. Thanks anyway, nice to have confirmation!

Yea, with all of the bends and shaping to help shifting, they're not always obvious -- I missed 'em the first time too 🙂.

Well in this case it's 22Tx4 but this is a new one on me, what do you do in the case of a 23T?
It should have the tab or mark that shows the alignment. It makes a difference in the way that the teeth on the 2 differnt rings line up when you shift. If it's rotated right, the chain will shift easily; if not, the chain won't engage both rings at the same time and will shift roughly or not at all.
