While running, my ankle began to hurt somewhat badly. I didn't turn it or tramatize it in any way, but now when I walk any distance or even stand for a time, it hurts directly above the heel and to the outer part of the ankle. It is the same kind of pain I have felt years ago when I turned my ankle.
There is no swelling or any kind of visible trauma.
What makes it worse is pressure to the heel. For example, I tried digging holes with a shovel, and when I used a booted heel to press the shovel down, I had some fairly severe pain.
My doctor took x-rays and found nothing. He prescribed anti- inflammatory pills and sent me on my way. It's been three weeks, and I suspect it might be something more serious.
are you a new runner ? have you increased your mileage? I have similar symptom and it is tendonitis. the tendon that controls pronation gets inflamed and the arch sags. it and overuse injury. you could also have plantar fascitis.

No, I've had plantar fascitis and I know that pain. This is further back, directly above the heel. I can't be the only one this has happened to.
It sure sounds like the case of tendinitis I gave myself a while back by trying to keep up with a friend who's a much faster runner in a 5K. I ended up very sore for a few weeks in the exact place you're describing, and ended up treating it with NSAIDs and buckets of icewater (I found buckets of icewater worked better around the contours of the ankle than ice or ice packs). My doc also prescribed a semi-stiff canvas-type brace that laced up in front to reduce ankle movement during the daytime.

Any thoughts?
Yeah. If it's an overuse injury, you probably shouldn't be further using it by digging holes in the back yard.
Thanks for the info. The day I ran, I did up my mileage a little, but not an incredible amount. Of course, it's early in the season and I might have done too much.
Your response gives me a lot of optimism.
Thanks,
Mike

Yeah...that was kind of how I injured mine. But my mistake was speed. I was in a 5K and I knew another guy in the race -- a cross country coach at the local high school. I really wanted to at least keep close to him and ran much faster than my usual 5K. I could tell right away after the race that I had tweaked the ankle, but it wasn't until after I drove home and got out of the car again that I realized how badly. But, thankfully, lots of RICE worked out well.
