  1. Accelerating away from the lights, running up through the gears, when there
is a loud metallic BANG! from somewhere behind. I thought it was someone
driving over a loose manhole cover and put it from my mind.

    Strange. Third gear is skipping.

On arrival at Larrington Towers, I soon discern the reason for the gear
malfunction, namely that a quarter of sprocket #3 is no longer there. It has
borken off where it is riveted onto the spider.

Since the cassette was fitted, on March 26th, it has done fewer than 350 km.
There is only one thing I can say about this state of affairs, and it is
    this: arseburgers.

They came for Eamonn Holmes; I think I'm right in saying that I applauded.

I have no idea. Dr Larrington stole the phrase from a passing Australian in
1978 and subsequently bequeathed it to Carl Gorham and Michael Hatt for use
    in "Stressed Eric".

Well I'm very impressed, enough to remember that one for future use!

Had that happen with two sprockets on a tandem in the middle of a tour.
Made it to the next town with the help of two zip ties round the body
to keep the remaining sprockets in position.

    ^^^^^^^

See? Cheap [censored] cassettes. Mine are held in with weeny allen bolts
so individual rings can be replaced. In theory.

Actually sounds more like expensive cassettes. XT and XTR have a spider
thingy onto which the rings are mounted - this is probably lighter.
Unfortunately the downside is the sprockets aren't as strong, as various
off-road tandem teams have discovered. The LX and equivalent cassettes like
    yours are stronger.

    cheers,

That's what you get with these new-fangled thin sprockets. Rapid wear and
    failure.

    Was this a 9 or 10-speed cassette?

XT 12-34 9-speed. It replaced an identical one which had done at least 5000
    of the BRITONS' miles.

To a novice, when driving a car
His son (in the back) said 'Papa!
if you drive at this rate
    we're sure to be late.
Drive faster!' He did, and they are.
