Just wondered what people thought about the following.
I'm doing up a friend of mines old tourer (1987 vintage). One of the things she wants is a triple chainset, natch'. Now SJS currently have a Sugino PX touing shainset on eBay (as well as the shop, but at £70 it's a bit pricey :-) The thing I'm slightly concerned about is that they say it will only take a 127.5 mm bb. Now this seems rather long to me, and I am slightly concerned about the length and also the affect it may have on the chainline. Also these bb's seems to be getting rarer with 122mm being the largest most shops stock. The problem is that it has the best chainring combination.
Does anyone have any opinions on this? (of course the whole things becomes accademic if I don't bid enough :-)

A long BB doesn't necessarily mean a far-out chainline. It depends where the design of the cranks puts the chainrings in relation to the bit that fits on the spindle. Sorry I don't know about Sugino PX.
You could get a decent Shimano or Campag or other triple for much less than £70 (elsewhere). What size chainrings are required? Specifically, what would be the smallest acceptable middle ring?
It can be worth buying a complete chainset just for the cranks, then alternative chainrings separately (selling the original rings to help pay for them). I would seriously consider doing that for anything other than one of the usual boring combinations.

Ypu could look at the Stronglight Impact triple at Spa Cycles. Takes a 113 bottom bracket I think. See http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b2s109p3 and costs £48. Best dealt with by phone and will also be helpful about bottom bracket sizing plus sell you one at a good price if that'what you need.

The problem with the Campag road triples was that they all came with large rings (i.e. no 28/26 inners and 50/52 outers), which would be OK fo rme :-), but not my friend who is getting her bike serviced as she's doing a LEJOG! Shimano road chainsets seemsed to be the same as Campag, and the MTB ones all came with rings too small :-(
Thanks for the help, I'd not though of Stronglight, but the I can get one of these and an UN73 bb for the same priice as I would have paid for the Sugino + bb, and specify the chinarings ! :-)
Radical - but it might be wiser to stick with metal. :-)

Compatible Stronglight & TA rings are available from Settle Cycles.
Bear in mind that Campag chainsets cost as little as £36 for Xenon and £46 for Mirage*, with BBs from £9. Unwanted Campag chainrings can be sold for several pounds each on eBay.
* Mirage crank arms are the same as much more expensive Centaur's (not sure about Xenon's), and all the BBs work fine. I'd recommend the Veloce BB to save a bit of weight for only a couple of quid extra -- 111mm if seat tube is < 32mm (and sometimes is ok even for 32mm seat tubes).
