  1. Is it possible, and how much?

A friend of mine tried to commit suicide a couple of days ago by taking
an overdose of GABA. According to her, she felt she would have a heart
    attack and die.

    She took 30 grams.

She is in intensive care and not doing well according to her boyfriend
who is also a friend of mine, and he said they were considering putting
    her on the ventilator.

I know very little about this supplement and am wondering if she could
be lying about what she took.

Dunno. Depends on the individual and any other drugs taken with it.

Probably not. Might go to sleep, stop breathing, and die. Or go to sleep,
vomit, aspirate, and die. But probably not a heart attack.

That might be a lot for a small female.

Yeah, if you're unconscious and can't control your own airway, that's a real
    good idea.

People who attempt suicide are not the most reliable folks in the world, so,
sure, she could be lying, but, why would she?

Overdosing on tricyclic antidepressants is a much more effective way to
    commit suicide.

Heh. I'll keep that in mind...

I've always thought that an overdose of K+ would work best, providing

    Painful? Really?
Why? I thought that too high of a K+ level just made your heart stop???

Then again, the vet uses Phenobarbital. I figured he had a reason for
that. Had to have a young deer put down once. It'd been hit by a car and
had a broken back with hindquarter paralysis. If I'd been on the ball,
I'd have shot it and dressed it out, but the vet tells me the bruising
from the accident would have made it inedible.

He found a vein, injected the drug, and the deer just "stopped". Instant
    and apparently painless death.....

I wonder why they don't use that for lethal injection of humans instead
    of that IV cocktail [censored]?

Unless they get their kicks out of the "Drama". :-P

Injecting concentrated potassium chloride into a vein causes extreme pain if
    you're conscious. Very caustic.

    Quoted message said:

Then again, the vet uses Phenobarbital.

No. Pentobarbital. Same class, different drug.

In a related, unrelated, dog fact, most dog foods have traces of
pentobarbital in them, thanks to the use of euthanized animals. Which is why
I only use one of the handful of super-premium dog foods available in the
US. 'Cause they don't. Among other reasons.

They do. To render the prisoner unconscious and unable to feel pain. Then
they inject potassium chloride to irreversibly stop the heart. Humane. It's
a requirement. Something about the Constitution.

You can overdose on Apples is you to many for to long of a period. If
you are seriously worried, consult a physician not here from the Peanut
    Gallery !!

Don't underestimate the collective knowlege available here...
Few physicians even know what GABA is, much less what it does!

You make a good point Om!!

    Cheers! :-)

    Painful? Really?
Why? I thought that too high of a K+ level just made your heart
    stop???

Injecting concentrated potassium chloride into a vein causes extreme pain
    if
    you're conscious. Very caustic.

Oh. Ok, I was thinking Oral potassium, but I guess that it is not
possible to OD even with prescription potassium?

You could, but, the effects wouldn't be immediate. Or reliably fatal. But
access isn't a problem. KCL is available as a salt substitute in
supermarkets and as a water softener, instead of NaCl. So, you just dissolve
as much as you can in some water, and inject it. Sterility isn't really a
    problem, since you're committing suicide.

Then again, the vet uses Phenobarbital.

No. Pentobarbital. Same class, different drug.

I could swear the bottle he took the drug out of said Phenobarb, but my
memory could be faulty. It was a few years ago.

The names are nearly identical, and doctors and nurses have been known to
mix them up. Not me, of course, those other people.

Pentobarb, phenobarb, pentathol...three commonly used drugs in intensive
    care medicine, easily mixed up.

In a related, unrelated, dog fact, most dog foods have traces of
pentobarbital in them, thanks to the use of euthanized animals. Which is
    why
I only use one of the handful of super-premium dog foods available in the
US. 'Cause they don't. Among other reasons.

    Damn. Is that really true?
I use Purina by my vet's recommendations.

Most vets, like most people doctors, know what little about nutrition that
they learned in school. And, in vet's case, that nutrition education is
bought and paid for by the Hill's pet food company.

I 'spose I could switch if it'd make a difference in my dog's health,
    especially the two elderly ones.

Do what you think is best. I wouldn't feed Purina to my worst enemy's dog.

<lol> I can imagine... Especially the stench if the corpse is not
    discovered anytime soon.

No, especially the death of all the upstairs tenants. The stench then
    only
    bothers the next-door neighbors.

Heh, okay, I was under the mistaken impression that CO was heavy and did
    not rise? Is that incorrect?

    That is incorrect.

And the paramedics. You know you're in trouble when the INSIDE of the
    windows are covered with flies.

    Been there, done that.

Ew. I thought you were a nurse, not a paramedic???

Is it possible, and how much?

A friend of mine tried to commit suicide a couple of days ago by taking
an overdose of GABA. According to her, she felt she would have a heart
    attack and die.

Talk about a cry for help. Your friend aint the brightest bulb is she?
My favorite is when a chick tries to commit suicide by an overdose of
    birth controll pills.
