  1. damn, it turned 42 and already i'm freaking that i'm falling apart. i
did 9 miles yesterday, 6 miles into it on a single knee bend felt "that
piercing pain" for the duration of the bend. the pain commenced
w/impact & end when pressure was removed (foot no longer on the surface
    of the road).

about 1 mile later i felt it again for the duration of a single strike
& lift off. and then about 1 more mile later...yup one more time. on
set of "Runner's Knee"? is this how it show's it's ugly face at first?

today i did another 9 miles and had the same thing occur 3 times as
    well.

of course i'm paranoid and read up all over the net on runners knee and
understand what's going on.....however did not come to any one
conclusive plan of recovery (lasting recover).

anyone ever overcome Runner's Knee? via a traning regiment?...or did a
couple of weeks off your feet do the trick? here's what I'm thinking.

1). these shoes w/about 50 miles on them that i wore on these two
occassions?...I'm going to switch to some old trusty shoes i've logged
    several hundred miles on
    2). avoid downhills
3). Gonna give Romanov's Posing a try and do a morning and evening 4
    miler (8 total/per).

    Whadday think?

I've got two 1/2M's schedule for March and I don't want to side on the
    sidelines....

Another 9? Wouldn't doing 3 or 5 proved the same thing?

Good start. Are the shoes radically different in last flexibility or
shape of last? What shoe are they in case anyone else has had similar
    experiences?

If it's RN avoid ALL hills - stay flat and short.

I think you need to get an accurate diagnosis but RICE can never do
harm. The R stands for rest which is not in many runners vocabulary.

Wrong attitude. You primary goal to get passed this problem. You have a
[censored] load of years left to race. Let's just hope it's the new shoes.

  3. I got one for the first time since 1969 last year.
I've always been somewhat of an over-pronater,
but hadn't paid much attention to it. So I just tried
a couple of different kinds of stability shoes and found a
brand that worked (ASICs). It took seven months
for all the symptoms to go away. In the meantime
more rest days and shorter runs. Previously I never
had a knee ache last more than a week and just
    ran through it.

  4. "Every time I stick my hand in the candle flame, I get
    burned..........how do I combat this?"

  5. "Every time I stick my hand in the candle flame, I get
    burned..........how do I combat this?"

    don't do it.

  6. I going to try and read between the lines here:

    single knee bend -

    did you stop to stretch?

where was the pain? under the knee cap, front, one side, etc.

what other symptoms lead you to believe you have runner's knee, are you
    refering to chrondromalacia?

what symptoms do you have when you are not running? has this ever
    happened "just around the house"?

re the deep knee bends, old doctors joke: if it hurts to do that, then
don't do it anymore. but if you do stretch, go very slow and pay
attention to what hurts, and if any muscles seem tighter than other,
opposing and left leg over right.

ICE get a couple of gel packs and apply as soon as possible after you
run for 10-15 minutes and again in an hour or two.

    re your thoughts:
    1. won't hurt, probably not the cause unless new shoes are dramatically
different that your previous shoes. this is why it is recommended to
have more that one brand of shoe that you rotate through, to keep your
body from getting into a groove that it shouldn't.
    2. good idea for the time being. but your quads may need some
strengthening if you really have runner's knee.
    3. don't even consider this until you have a real good idea of what's
going on in your knee, sudden and drastic changes in running form could
end up causing more damage than help.

Oh and the R part of RICE is rest. Hopefully the impending snow storm
will provide you with sufficient incentive to stay inside and rest. Most
importantly, chill, you are so uptight, understandably so, that you
can't even write a coherent, grammatically correct sentence:

All your serious training for these half's is in the bank, all you need
to do is keep the neuro's fresh. consider this God's way of getting you
    to taper.

  7. thanks bump....before i posted i googled up/studied up on classic
"Runner's Knee" and had all the right pain in the right place at the
right moment (piercing, under the cap a hair to the outside, on the
    bend).

none of the sites though discuss the "on set" of Runner's Knee.
    Example...is it a "drop, that turns into a trickle...and then a flow"?
i was more so interested if others who had Runner's Knee...how does it
    show up?....the pattern.

so far it's a "drop" of pain every couple of miles (when my cap is not
bending in ideal alignment - laymen description). I'm thinking i'm
dealing w/Runner's Knee as today I was going down stairs with a 40 .lb
box in my arms and as I decended and bent the knee "ouch".. Wasn't
even thinking....being smart about descending the stairs properly.

As usual Doug's got me pegged pretty good. I think I'm going to stay
off the roads for about 4 days, let the 1 foot of snow hit
NYC....let'em clear the roads...and try and put in a flat 4 miler on
    Thursday morning.

Yup...I'm gonna pull out some old trusty shoes and give this Pose a
real try as it suppose to be less stressing on the knee.

This excellent site will provide you with excellent information for
diagnosis, treatment, prevention and tips for knowing you're all
healed. The folks that prepared the web site are interested in keeping
those injured informed. And the best thing is that they have a sports
background so you'll get information for an athlete.

    Well worth the visit

Couple of weeks off could do it.

Good -- then you can get yourself an achilles injury and a calf injury to go
    with your knee.

If you're serious about improving your running form, do some structured speed
work instead of doing all your training runs fast enough to tire yourself out
but not fast enough to get a real training effect. But don't do it while you're
    injured.

That's the other thing -- you're not even slightly strategic about your racing.
You haven't prepared and peaked especially for these races, they aren't a whole
lot more important than any other race (or at least, your training doesn't
reflect that), so what's the point ? Either bag the races, or do them as a
training run (run with your girlfriend or something to keep yourself honest
    with the pace)

  10. A couple of things I forget to mention are:
    (1) The knee supports in a drugstore can be helpful.
    I found the mini-strap to be useful for just kneecap stability;
wear on the calf just blow the knee. When the nearby
muscles are sore, I find the full-size bandage (compression)
    more useful.
    (2) Strength training can help alot. You'd think that running
would giving you all the strength training you need, but it
only helps selected muscles. This can be (a) cross-training
like hiking and biking which use a different muscle subset,
    (B) isometric exercises (without weights) or (c) modest
weight work. There are several books on knee injuries
    with regimens prescribed.
