  1. So basically powerlifting is done. But my body feels like it got "et by a

    M-W-F

    [censored]
    C&J
    [censored] Hi-pulls
    Front squat
    Chins

T-Th-S (prolly 1-2 days in a typical week)

    Rack power jerk
    OH squat
    [censored] grip press behind neck

    And then the kicker...

M-W - wrestling - with my sparring partner being Steve Bilan - the U of S
Huskie QB who is weighting in about 260 right now, has the biggest bench
on the squad and a chest so thick I was trying to throw him today and I
could barely get a clinch around his chest.

About like going 60 minutes with a bear. I think he was going to take it
easy on my till I did a fireman's on him and put him on his back.
    :^)

But dayum. Am I sore. I check their roster and they got him listed at 215.
Right. Mebbe when he was 18. Guy is huge. Looks more like a linebacker or
    defensive end.

No real squats and no subs, pitiful. ;-)

I'm tripling 335 in an ATTG front squat. (Well - that is a good day. i
won't be able to on Friday). So I think that serves the legs just fine.
The posterior chain is worked by the hi-pulls.

    :^)

Seriously tho - what is the point? The back squat is plenty strong. My
weak area is definately shoulder flexibility and catch in the [censored] and
it also affect my jerk. Also catch and base position in the clean. So
pounding away on back squats would really serve no purpose. It'd be good
for building my ego, but not much other point.

As for submissions - that wouldn't be my weak area either. It would be
take-downs. I'm getting a lot of work in that. With this guy, on ground
techniques, you better hope for a choke. His arms are about 19" -
seriously. The guy's upper body is enormous. Little chance for an arm bar.
Ankle locks, achilles locks, etc. might work. But I'd wear a gi and use it
for a choke if I had a choice.

Hey, that particular reason is high on the list of why I do 315# full
squats at least twice a week, buster.

Lotta flexibility work you're doing there... that's not going to be a
weakness for very long, I think. Nice going.

Gotta love triangles - no gi required.

There's a guy at the club who can just shrug out of my triangle, but he
is - no [censored] - twice as strong as me. No way this guy is twice as
strong as you... and hey, if you pull guard to triangle him he'll think
he's winning until the noose tightens. ;-)

Some of the new half-guard leg crushes work on the strong guys really
    well, too.

Sounds like a blast Keith. I've been thinking about sparring again. But
damn I'm old. I just do promotion testing at the Dojang and I work out on
my own away from it. I don't even teach anymore, just oversee other
blackbelts that do. But...I miss sparring. I know my kind of sparring
isn't the submission stuff, but I still like it. It's like playing
    chess...a lot strategy involved.

In fact, I just called a local MMA gym yesterday testing the waters. But
    dude...I'm too old for that.

Funny how folkstyle wrestling (around here at least) has really become all
about takedowns. All the camps and videos really stress that stuff. State
tourneys are won by takedown, let up, takedown, let up, etc. You seldom see
a good, old school ground wrestler anymore.

    Keith,

Are you working on a Bulgarian type approach for the MWF workouts (going to
a max for the day). Or, are you doing a periodized approach? For the
Tues/Thurs/Sat workouts I would also throw in a pressing [censored] balance to
work on flexibility and shoulder strength in the [censored] position.

Get with it. We don't slow down as we age - we age as we slow down. I know

No, I basically am using more of a Tommy Kono 'body feel' approach. So I

    everyday.

The [censored] balance is a good idea. Thanks.

With maxing out in C+J and [censored] and all that other work three times a

I don't max out. I don't even go to an unpsyched max that often.

I can split [censored] about 90 kgs right now and power [censored] 85. However,
I'm determined to do a squat [censored] for various reasons that usually would
have 'hard-headed' and 'stubborn' in the mix. So my [censored] is typically
5-6 sets of 2-3 reps and looks more like a power [censored] to OH squat. The
most I have used is 55 kgs. Shoulder flexibility won't allow more - yet.

My C&J is getting close to 300 lbs now, but typically I'll do 5-8 singles
with between 90 kgs and 110 kgs, depending on how I feel. The clean is
normally very easy - the jerk is highly variable.

Hi-pulls are normally done for 3-4 sets of 3-5 reps with speed being the
primary focus. I normally just do the same weight I was using for the C&J.

Front squats are rarely done heavy - most days I do between 275 and 335
for triples and do a few sets.

On the other days the focus isn't on weight at all - it is on getting the
shoulders ROM up to snuff. SO until I can actually get the body inclined
forward at the catch of the [censored] and feel comfortable I'm not using all
that much weight. Ditto for the press. The power jerk is done very light
    and focus is on speed.

So - no. I don't think overtraining is an issue. I'm doing some sprint
training as well as the wrestling for GPP and to get ready for ball
season. And I'm thinking seriously of playing rugby this summer.

won't be able to on Friday). So I think that serves the legs just
    fine.
The posterior chain is worked by the hi-pulls.

Seriously tho - what is the point? The back squat is plenty strong. My
weak area is definately shoulder flexibility and catch in the [censored]
    and
it also affect my jerk. Also catch and base position in the clean. So
pounding away on back squats would really serve no purpose. It'd be
    good
for building my ego, but not much other point.

As for submissions - that wouldn't be my weak area either. It would be
take-downs. I'm getting a lot of work in that. With this guy, on
ground techniques, you better hope for a choke. His arms are about
    19" -
seriously. The guy's upper body is enormous. Little chance for an arm
bar. Ankle locks, achilles locks, etc. might work. But I'd wear a gi
    and use it
for a choke if I had a choice.

No. You are not too old.

Get with it. We don't slow down as we age - we age as we slow down. I know
that is not exactly right and ageing is far more complex, but I refuse to
go gently into that good night.
