You need a George.

Some years ago a friend with a Marin Team needed to change the BB. It was
held in with a ring with 2 holes in it. He bought the official Marin tool -
no chance.

After some hours of sweating and swearing, and being a farmer, he took the
oxy blowtorch to it - no chance.

Chisels had no effect.

I rang another friend, MD of a plastics factory, they have a tool room. He
advised me to bring it over with a few tins of beer, George would look at
it.

We took it to George in the toolroom. We walked back to the MD's office and
you know what happened next. Several minutes later George brought the frame
up - minus the BB. He said nothing, except thanks for the beer. We'll never
know how he did it

Had this once on a Specialzed Hardrock, many years ago. It hadn't been
greased when built up at the factory. Got it out by dismantling the
UN52 in situ, plastic cup out reasonably easily, then grinding, on a
flexible shaft the old BB out of the shell, just down to the threads,
but not enough damage or heat to take paint offf the frame. needle to
flick the bits of metal out of the threads. Took me about 2hrs and a
new Shimano tool at the time.

All fine after that.

I opt for the brute force and ignorance method in this situation. Last
time I had a badly seized BB (on a bike bought from the tip for a
fiver) I stuck the BB tool on my impact gun and gave it full chat.
Took about 60 seconds 🙂

I've used this on stubborn freewheels too, works well except you
/really/ have to lock it down hard with the chain whip.

Big grunty power tools.... lovely.

Incidently, both tools used were the cheapo ones bought from mike
dyason, both survived remarkably well considering they probably aren't
spec'd for impact use. Good value.

I reckon I've had 500 lb ft of torque on this now, by clamping the tool
in a vice and turning the frame. Still won't budge, but the tool has a
nasty habit of jumping out of the splines and scratching the paint,
which thankfully is an easy colour to touch up. Into the bike shop on
Monday, I suppose - I want the BB cleaning and facing anyway for the new
Axix BB.

I bet the assemblers didn't use grease.
