I just swapped my rear Avid mech out for a Shimano Deore XT V brake.

Weighed the V plus cable against the Avid plus cable plus rotor, found a diff of
    110g - i.e. about 1.75 ounces.

    One ounce = 28 grams.

    Not a whole lot on a 31# bike ridden by a 220#
    rider IMHO.

I weigh more. :-P Lose 31 pounds and you've got the equivalent of a
    bike that weighs 0 pounds.

Is this typical? Seems like a lot of the disc brake setups I see on other bikes
look considerably lighter than that Avid mech...and there doesn't seem like much
room for lightening a V brake... Could it be a wash in some cases?

IMO, the whole point of disk brakes is to get the braking mechanism out
of the water, crud, and mud. Weight isn't as much as a factor as the
    functionality.

Beating up on an easily replacable disk is better than ripping the hell
out of the sides of your aluminum rim with embedded junk in the pads
especially in the winter, riding through puddles and sand from the
sanding trucks and hearing that gawd-awful scraping sound on your Open Pros.

That's what kept me from fooling around with V's for the last year or so. Put
one on way back when and the first ride was a little muddy. Made my blood run
    cold...
