Looks like we could start a new grouping after the Argos tent one seems to
have died out.... Stagg Chilli Eaters!
They do 3 different varieties, what's the difference? What's your favourite?

I've only had the Vegetarian variety and I had it for the first, and
so far only, time last week.
It was OK, I suppose, but not as good as I'd been led to believe. It
was nowhere near as good as the chickpea chilli I make.
At least it was relatively hot.
Sainsbury tinned veggie curry is quite nice. I thought it looked a
bit runny but it had loads of nice bits in. Also, Morrisons/Safeway
Bombay potato is good.

I few years ago when I had a little less money, and before I had a fridge, I
used to buy all my food cheap from lidls. one thing I tried once was a
canned chili called "le cauldron".
I don't think that it was made by a French chef, but it did look like
something that was made in a cauldron. I found arteries, pieces of heart
valves, and all sorts in it.
while on the subject of food I recently had a look on sainsburys website for
some new food for wild camping and found some nice dolmio quick cook pasta,
which was filled with cheese and ham. it weighs 220g, and only needs to be
heated with a little water for a few minutes. it tried it with two babybel
cheeses melted in with it. it wasn't bad, a packet sauce mix would improve
it though. I'm not shore what the calorie count is, but with the cheese
mixed in it seemed like enough for a meal.
another nice one is Coleman's tuna and pasta bake sauce mix with pasta and a
80g can of tuna. there's also some new "be good to yourself" pasta and sauce
mixes. I tried the tomato and mascarpone one. it was much nicer than any of
the bachelors ones. and actually tasted like a proper food. it weighs 120g.
but like the bachelor pasta snacks it is meant to be made with milk instead
of water so the sauce was fin.
does anyone actually like vesta meals?

before someone points it out, what I meant to say was the sauce is meant be
made with milk not water, so it was thin. not fin as in sharks fin, or the
fin or fins of any other fish.

The Classic is the one we take out with us. It is really good when your
camping. Funny though, when you eat it back in the house it's nowhere near
as nice.

I'm a little disappointed to hear that, Scott. I was already writing a

Take half a pound of arteries,
Some heart, a valve, some fin;
Then mix them up with chilli sauce,
For backpacking with vim!

ASDA's tinned curries are quite nice. On the veggie menu is Bombay
Potato and Veg Tikka Massala.
A while back somebody here mentioned some curries in a pouch (curry to
go?) which were supposed to be good. I think I have seen them a long
time ago but I have not managed to track them down since they were
mentioned :-(

I remember them, better than the tinned stuff imho as the chicken seemed
less stringy, and less weight to carry in/out. Shame they vanished...

For yonks I've been getting those Wayfayrer packs which weigh just the same
as a tin of chilli or brekkie in a can but cost 3 times as much.... and all
I'm doing is a dayhike!
I think fiscal reality is hitting me this year, the weight of a tin etc is
so little I'm wasting my money by saving a few grams carried.

You'd need Vim to get the pan clean. :-(

I've considered taking it with me on a short trip but worry that the
bag would burst and I'd end up with a Chilli flavoured sleeping bag!
I must have a look at Lakeland Plastics' (or have they dropped the
"plastics" now?) website and see if there are any boil-in-the-bag type
bags which may be up to the rigours of backpacking.
I'll look into the business possibilities once I've proved the
concept!

Several years ago, I had the responsibility to research foodpacks for a
caving expedition in the French Alps. I came across a mail order company
called "Pack and Go". They claimed that their dried food portions contained
all the calories and nutrients required to sustain people on expeditions. We
tried a few samples, and they were all really excellent (I don't know if the
company still exists, but their "power drink" was fantastic!) However, the
chilli (either vegetarian or normal) was lethal, or rather the after effects
were... Although I had warned people not to have the chille before going
underground, at least two people did not heed the warning. In retrospect, it
was really amusing to witness these two, frantically trying to remove all
their caving harnesses and one-piece suits running around looking for a
suitably private hole in the ground to relieve their immediate problems.
Since then, I've always avoided currys and chillis before any form of
strenuous exercise...
Cheers,
Glenn

As a chilll-hound I must confess that Stagg (brands var.), although
poss the best on the go, are [still] lacking "chilliness".

No! No more kitchen gadgets! I might have to start using them if I
get any more!
Plastic bags are as hi-tech as I want to get.

That sounds good - any chance of the recipe, please? I can reciprocate
with one for a rather nice brown lentil chilli if you want...
Thanks.

It's Lakeland Limited now. They do bags like you want
