The weather pretty much sucks all over. I think Jersey is going to
float away soon. But at least it's not snow. I am so glad I bought a
bike this year. I've had about 10 good days to ride it since the fall.
My brother left for Tahoe the day we had thick fog and the airport
closed in Newark. He got out just in time. He said the weather is
beautiful out there now. Last week they had 4 ft of snow.

Speaking as a fellow PNWer, I concur. But I don't think
the Californians wanted our usual weather in the first place.
Anyhow, we're getting back to normal this weekend.

Like the song goes: "When the rain came, I held my breath
with my eyes closed ..." I can hardly wait to get awheel again.

It was just overcast here all day in Vancouver (BC),
with a sense of imminent, incipient storminess. It
didn't get above freezing all day. Sunrise at 8:01 AM,
sunset at 4:30-something. It's supposed to snow tonight,
followed by freezing rain in the wee hours, followed by
good ol, familiar rain <sigh of relief>

Maggie it wasn't bad today. I managed to get in 29 miles after school
(I'm taking Saturday courses 9-2). Tomorrow morning I'll do another 30
- 40. Earlier in the week it was bad, I road the rollers instead.

That is about how my afternoon ride went, 37 degrees F, fog, and just
plain un-Californian. I had on 3 tee shirts, then long sleeve/leg sweats
(top and bottom), then a jacket and one of those ski mask kind of head
warmers, plus two pair of gloves and my Fred goggles to protect my eyes.
I wore my 55 degree gloves inside my 45 degree gloves. I could barely
move when I got the bike out. Nice and warm from the feet to my neck,
but freezing nose, chin, and ear lobes sticking out from the head
warmer. 12 MPH was about it since if I went faster I was at risk of
freezing my exposed parts and sweating under all the clothing at the
same time. Strange way to ride, I felt like a little kid that was sent
out by his mother all wrapped up to play in the snow and unable to move
to pickup a snow ball. At least I got out of the house without a car.
And those totally silly looking swim goggles actually did protect my
eyes from a chill tear effect that gets me when it gets under about 45
to 50 degrees F. I should have had a cruiser, that would have gone with
the dress up and the slow riding.
I want my 100 degree summer back and I promise not to complain until,
umm, September, err, August. I should have taken a self portrait and
linked to it then you could have all had a laugh. The goggles really
topped off the outfit.

about backed-up storm drains.

And the bursitis thing that's been plaguing my
right shoulder finally went away.

We've been getting snow,then it will get warm and we get sleet or
freezing rain. Which turns into huge puddles and mush. Inevitably it
freezes and we get ice. SO we have almost no snow left, it's cold and
dry and there's chunks of ice on the side of the road. Blech! I wish
it was july!

I know what you mean. It barely got over 70 degrees F (21C) here

It has been raining buckets non-stop since early morning. A fifty
minute ride washed all the salt off my bike. There's another 50mm
predicted for tomorrow. Snow's gonna be all gone after that. Most
roads are 100% clear now. We're supposed to be back to normal
temperatures and rain for the rest of the week.

The snow was fun for a few days until it got all chewed up by cars.
After the surface had been packed, it was quite tolerable for cycling
with just plain tires. The studs were handy after it had gotten
polished and re-frozen. The surface steadily eroded from continued
use. To some extent, the natural narrowing of the streets has a
universally applied traffic calming effect. Fewer cars were venturing
out when it was at its prime for cycling.

Tom Keats et al can blame me if it snows again. I swapped the studs
back to slicks today.

It really does. I've been making up for a bunch of lost time
today, feeling happy as a pig in ... clean pajamas. We may
get into the Celcius double-digits later this week. We're also
forecast to get a foot of rain by Thursday. I've almost got enough
confidence in the refurbished Norco Mountaineer to take 'er up the
Lougheed Hwy as far as the weather's good and the roads are clear.
Haney, anyways. Oops ... I mean Maple Ridge.

Louis Garneau tights are wonderful in this weather.

It's been single digit F's here in Chicagoland. Right now my local
airport station, KDPA is reporting a solid 0.0F.

I wish it would warm up. My Nokian Extreme 294s are awesome, and i
carved some nice figure-8s in the Fox river, but... it's hard work
pedaling in this weather. Hard to balance warmth with moisture
rejection (i err in favor of warmth and dry my layers at work, all over
my office)

OTOH, The only bike tracks on the river trail through St. Charles
belong to me. South of there, it's just me and my work buddies.
