  1. Hi All!

Well, I'm not sure if I'm going nuts, but, I'm about to sign up for my first
marathon... ever.. My question to you runners is... (am I nuts).. here is
kindof a brief outline of where I am now.

    - Started running a year ago (longer distances)...
    - Did two 1/2 marathons last year (wow, I now have such a huge respect for
that distance.. and when I finished, I though (hey, I might just be half way
if this was a marathon). - my time was 2hr 50min.
    - I'm a bit overwight 214lb. 5'10'
    - 37 years old
    - deskjob (so my only activity is running).

Anyhow, I'm thinking of signing up for this Septemer (earlybird discount is
closing, and I though, hey, just jump on it)... am I overdoing this? -
should I wait a couple years?

    Thanks everyone!

You're either trolling, or very misguided. Sure, it's a discount. But it's
not much use to you unless you can finish it uninjured, with a half respectable
time. 2:50 for a half marathon is a walking pace. Why are you attempting to
run a marathon when you're unable to run a half marathon ? Or were you
    planning to walk ?

    Cheers,

  3. Oh c'mon, it's not like anyone will laugh and make fun of you if you
fail...................any more than they do already.

  4. Rick: If you ran 2 half marathons last year, then you have some idea
of what it takes to go the distance, but let me reiterate: You have
only some idea. It is actually harder than it seems because in the
marathon, you are not half done with your challenge at 13.1 miles. In
my experience, you might be half done at 20 miles, or maybe 21.

If you don't mind walking some, then maybe this is a reachable goal
this year, but however you do it, I think you would be really
well-served to drop about 25 pounds. Losing even a few pounds makes
    the marathon much easier.

A better plan would be to really be religious about your training this
year, and lose some weight. Run another Half, or 2, and look at the
    marathon next year.

I think this plan would be more likely to result in an achievement you
would be happy with, and it would probably be less risky.
    Good luck,

    Brian Jones

i'm not sure which marathon you're intending on running but i believe your
best hope to finish this race is to follow the plan that made me successful
and famous (some say infamous). it requires that your marathon be on a route
with lots of spectators to cheer you on (and confuse the judges) and a good
mass transit system. dont be too greedy though...at your size finishing
under 2:10 will not go unnoticed or unchallenged. go for an amazing sub
3:00. this will only [censored] some age-group runners and they have no lives
    anyway.

  7. Don't listen to any of the overweight bozos on this board. Most of them
know nothing about running. You need to carefully take a look at your
body weight. I wouldn't recommend anyone of your weight to be running
distance, nevermind marathons. Check any online BMI calculator. You are
considered OBESE. If any runner ever came to train under me at that
kind of weight, I would not even allow them to run one step. I'd tell
them to lose 40 pounds, then come back and see me for some coaching and
    some more weight loss.

  8. i think you're being a little harsh here donovan. true, it's a big
leap from the half to the full, but nonetheless....right now since he's
hitting 13 minute/miles....not even up'ing his training he can
certainly enter a marathon and finish. i say go for it. as long as he
can go sub 23min/mile over the course of the marathon, he can hit that
sub 10 hour mark by a whisker. just shoot for a 22:53 mile average
and the sub 10hr is in the bag.
    good luck

  9. For once in his life Donovan is correct. Lance and you other fat losers
on rec.running know nothing about weight and how it relates to running
performance. I'm tired of reading all your BS about how you walked a
marathon on no training while carrying 40 pounds of extra fat.

Flabby, you can't play Macelroy, you have zero creativity but nice try.
With your style you may get voted the most unimaginative troll.

  12. Hey Brian:

Yes, I probably didn't make myself clear in the first post... I don't plan
on going in cold turky... I am not running this one till September.. and
will be quite religous about it... I also plan on loosing as much wight as
possible between now and then... (I know its a factor, thats why I
    mentioned it)...

Anyhow, I plan on doing another 1/2 this may as well, and see how it
goes... wrose case, I just found out I could drop down from the full to the
half for (and pay a small fee) if I'm not ready as the day gets closer.

Anyhow, thanks to those who gave good advice... and to the rude ones... no
    response...

  13. Thanks... and yea, I definatly won't be running full out.. a light Jog...
my goal for the 1/2 was to jog, and not stop, or come in last...

for the Full, a few walking breaks won't bother me...

Thanks so much for your encouragment...

September is far enough away, so why not go for it and use it as an
incentive to lose weight and be more active. Consider cross-training instead
    of running only.

  20. If you were running 1/2 marathons in 1:50, I would say that is good
for someone weighing 214 lbs and you are almost ready. But if you're
doing 2:50, that is just a fast walk pace. If that's the case, I
suggest you save the $50 or whatever and find another way to torture
    yourself for 6 hours.
