net carbs?

  1. I noticed recently that companies are putting net carbs on their
    labels and advertising it as a low carb product.

    Would someone please explain exactly what they mean by the next carbs?

    I think it's carbs that are digested by the body or something like
    that... not sure

    For American products, you can subtract fibre from the total carbohydrate
    count to get net carbs. This is already done for you in European products.

    count to get net carbs. This is already done for you in European products.

    It used to be that net carbs were the total carbohydrate amount minus
    the fiber portion of carbohydrates. Nowadays manufacturers also
    subtract sugar alcohols. People have varying degrees of tolerance for
    sugar alcohols and it's an ongoing debate here as to whether to count
    them, just count them partially or not at all. Other than erythritol, I
    mostly just avoid them completely. If sugar alcohols give you
    hellacious flatulence and barely controlled diarrhea, then GOOD NEWS --
    you're not absorbing them very well so they probably can be safely
    deducted from the overall carb count :-)
