"Self-extracting crank bolts must never be used with ISIS spindles - this will void the warrenty."
Why is that?? Self-extracting bolts are made for splined pattern spindles, but are they only to be used on ShimaNo Octalink?? If so, what is the difference between ISIS and Octalink, besides the spline pattern??

My TruVativ and RaceFace Isis BBs both came WITH self-extracting crank bolts.
Many ISIS cranks have self extracting bolts BUT I recommend using the little stud into the BB spindle end and using a conventional crank puller. Less problems.

Not the least of which is stripping of the allen heads. What's the torque spec for an ISIS crank bolt anyway?

I often find these statements that seem to abound in bicycling with no supporting evidence or reason. I would also like to hear why this is said. On the other hand, a company that makes hubs with three flanges cannot be entirely credible.

I just got the FSA Gassamer compact crank and the platinum pro ISIS cromoly bottom bracket. Only the self extracting bolts were included so I emailed customer support on this. FSA sent me the bolts within 3 days.
They also included a steel bolt for what I think is used to set the cranks into position per the instructions. Using this should eliminate problems with stripping the allen head.

But the FSA three flange wheels [1] look really cool when the bicycle is parked outside the upscale coffee shop! Sometimes Jobst Brandt fails to understand what is really important in cycling. He could learn a lot from Fabrizio Mazzoleni about bicycle fashion. 😉

how about 'we're fed up with customers buggering up the threads with unsuitable bolts and crying on our shoulder'? BTW it is sound advice, and should be extended to octagon spindles as well imho

Just a modern interpretation of the lever tension driving wheel (sharp, p 342), probably engineers having a bit of fun, but you wouldn't approve of course 😉

FWIW.
My Truvativ cranks came with self extracting crank bolts AND self extracting crank ring bolts.
The last time I removed my crank arms, I removed the bolts, tapped them a few times with a rubber face hammer and caught them before they hit the floor.
I've been "away" for a while- did they finally get the tolerances on the various tapers close enough that ISIS cranks will actually get tight?
