Expeditions - how often?

Only attended one, Exped 13 camping just north of Bala near the Canoe
centre, and walked in the Arenigs.

Most arrived Friday and left on the Sunday. Take a look at Paul Saunders

Well up for it but a hostel would probably be better for me as I don't

You can look at Bill and Fran's websites too. In fact, if you google
for Exped in URW you'll find several links to TRs and photos.

Anyone can organise an Exped but it's like herding cats. Apparently,
it has been reported that some people in this ng have "lives" and
aren't always available to go away for the weekend. Personally, I'm
not sure this is absolutely true but that's what they say.

I've only been to one, Exped 15. We talked about it for months
beforehand but I seem to recall it was only in the last 2 or 3 days
beforehand that I had the vaguest idea what was happening ..... but I
put this down to me not paying attention.

If you're happy to do some preemptive organisation of a Spring 05
Lakes Expedition then I'm sure you'd find some willing attendees, me
included. I reckon what most people want is:

- Fairly easy car access.
- Cheap campsite with toilet and shower (but we don't need Bingo or a
disco, thank you.)
- Nearby Pub
- Oh, I nearly forgot ... somewhere good to walk. Preferably a varied
landscape so that the superfit chaps can go bounding up hills, and the
likes of me can walk *round* the hills!

Good campsite in Braithwaite, 1.5 mile past Keswick, and18 miles along the
A66 from the M6 at Penrith. Toilet block with a mini-shop, and a cafe that
(I think) does breakfast. Never stayed there, although my son did a couple
of years ago when Clare and I was in Braithwaite. Often stay in
Braithwaite, so familiar with the site.

Good selection of hills to walk from the campsite. Grisdale Pike, Causey
Pike, Grassmoor, Skiddaw from Millbeck, or a short drive up the A66 to
Blencathra. A shortish drive through the Newlands Valley leads to
Buttermere and the High Stile range, or up to Pillar/Kirk Fell etc.

Great pub available too, the Coledale Inn, short walk from the campsite.
Also, another pub, The Royal Oak, even closer, but the Coledale is a more
walker-orientated pub. Good beer and food.

You weren't on Expedition 10 were you? Most of the tents and Jhimmy's car
broken into while we were up the pub on Friday evening.

Whoever suggests a place and a time and can get as many people to agree -
thats when an Expedition happens! Problem lately is that the chap who used
to organise it (Chris Boughey), doesn't now, he's now a professional guide
(or something like that). Nobody else wants to take the reins at
organising - mind you there's not much to organise!.

There's been too many Expeditins in Wales lately (IMHO), the ELD has only
had 2 Expeditions (including the ill fated one!). Scotland has also has 2
as well, but that's a long distance for most of you.

In winter, I'll head for the YHA if near. In the other 3 seasons, I'll
camp. Yes, a nice Scottish winter Expedition is calling (only needs someone
to organise it.) If there's enough of us, why don't we hire a closed SYHA.
In Summer, Lets have a ELD one!

As for time, usually Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday. Almost all I've
been on, I've stayed longer.

The best one I've been on - Expedition Glen Coe - great weather, cold and
snow, mmmm lovely- although the Chilli Con Corne wasn't very good at the
Kingshouse!

I spent last weekend in the Cairngorms staying the Friday night at the
new Aviemore Bunkhouse next to the Old Bridge Inn. £14 a night get
you a 5 star bunkhouse complete with en suite and shower in every

It is a good campsite and the location is great, but it's also a highly
regulated place. The gate shuts at 10.30 (I think) and the ever-cheerful
chappie that runs it seems to delight in turning people away with no offers
of where else they might go when its full. Recommended with those provisos.

An alternative might be the BrothersWater campsite (a pub, a hotel and a
bunkhouse as well as a campsite, excellent showers too) with options for
walking on Helvellyn, Fairfield and High Street.

And I might turn up for this one too, subject to the date, the vagaries of
the weather and life's other little enjoyments...

No, though sorry to hear a bad report. Never used the site, so no
first-hand experience. Its just that its a convenient place for walking and
good food/beer without having to drive. But ......... I am sure there will
be other sites just as good regards location/pubs.

Agree with this too. Was going to suggest Patterdale, but wasn't sure of
the campsites. Certainly some good walks from there. St Sunday over Cofa
Pike to Fairfield is also a good option. Pleasant outing.
