  1. My domain name is coming up for renewal and I'm thinking of finding a
new web hosting deal. I don't need anything sophisticated, but it does
need to be reliable. I'm currently paying £7.95pm with what used to be
Host Europe but is now Pipex. I don't like Pipex, so I'm planning to
move. I can certainly get it cheaper than £7.95pm, but I don't mind
paying a little over the odds for reliability and service, on the odd
    occasion when I need it.

Does anyone have any suggestions, please? I tried to find an internet
magazine in WH Smith a couple of weeks ago making recommendations
about this sort of thing, but I couldn't. Nor have several web
searches over a period of about 12 months thrown anything up.

    Thanks for any help.

    Best wishes,

I use 1&1, plenty of space and plenty of traffic before you start paying
    extra for it.

    Hi
I host my scubadiving club's website with purplecloud for a tenner a
year. Perfectly happy with the service, I'm on my second year. I guess a
lot depends if their features, bandwidth and webspace suit you.

I have been using 1&1 for a couple of years and the service is great.
Starting package (1&1 Home) includes the following:

    a.. 1 free co.uk domain
    b.. 800 MB web space
    c.. 300 1GB POP3/IMAP accounts
    d.. 10 GB/month bandwidth
    e.. 5 Symantec® Virus Scans included
f.. Spam filtering for all accounts
g.. Register 25 .info domains free!
    h.. 1&1 Chat
    i.. Linux based
There are no extras or set-up fee either, plus a variety of free software.
They were also advertising in Computer Mags/Phot mags recently that new
customers got a FREE copy of Frontpage 2003. Sadly it was only for new
    customers sigh!

Worth having a look at their website.

    I use 34sp.com

    www.34sp.com

Standard account is £15/year but it's very basic.

I use it, it's good but you might prefer one&one if you want more space etc

Here's the link to the tariffs - http://www.34sp.com/hostingfeatures.html

I registered my domain with http://www.easily.co.uk. I will have been with
them for four years by January. There was one day of down time during that
period but it was documented on the status page and sorted out within a
couple of hours. It's about a tenner for two years with a .co.uk domain.
This includes web forwarding and about 15 different email forwarders (so,
[email hidden] and [email hidden] can forward to different
addresses). I've never used anyone else but they seem to do a good job.

For actual hosting, I use 34sp.com. I've been with them for just over a
year. For 15 per year pounds they give you 50 megs (was 30 but they
upgraded it this week) and 1 gig per month traffic. The hosting allows an
SQL database and server side scripting so you can setup a bulletin board
system/news site/gallery/forum etc. Theoretically, I could log into my
site from a library or web cafe and submit and authorize a new article
using Postnuke. It's proper hosting so you can view all of the stats for
    page views etc.

They also give you five pop email addresses and mail boxes. For example, I
use it as my main email box and I have set up an address for a family
member to use in another box.

Technically, I've not a had a single problem with the service. I made an
enquiry to the tech staff on one occasion and it was quickly answered.
There is also a decent (publicly accessible) user forum on their site.

    I use HostLogical http://www.hostlogical.com/?a_aid=23&a_bid=8 (the
extra parameters make sure I get some money if you sign up!)

The basic package is only £10 per year, which is amazing value
considering what you get- unlimited email addresses, unlimited MySQL
and PHP, free support for CGI and FrontPage extensions (spit),
unlimited subdomains, etc etc. That gets you 50Mb and 500Mb per month
bandwidth which may or may not be enough. I use the basic package for
2 of my sites, the £15 per year version (100Mb/1000Mb per month) for
my other. The equivalent price to your exist package (7.99 per month)
gets you 1 Gb space with 12 Gb/month bandwidth!

I've been using them for about 3 months now and the service levels
have been excellent (100% availability so far). The only downside is
that their support is poor - it's hit or miss whether you get an
    answer to emails.

I have some web pages with what used to by CIX. These have now been taken

I have some web space with Demon, not the cheapest but very reliable.

This looks OK; it seems to be a Pipex cheap service - but as good as you
might need. Various costs here, all much better than they charge me for my

That's where I looked a couple of days ago. I tried to ring them, to
check wehther they offered the few things I actually need, but when I
rang customer services for the info they told me I had to ring the 50
pence per minute support line instead, just to get info about whether
or not I wanted to give them my business or not! What is it with
Pipex... so at that stage I decided to look elsewhere.

Perhaps I'll take another look at Demon. Thanks!

Does anyone know the difference, in practical terms, between Linus and

A penguin-powered host will generally have Open Source tools such as Perl,
PHP and MySQL loaded, though whether the hosting company allows users to
write their own CGI scripts and use databases is up to them of course.

A BillyBox would expect users to use point-n-click penc such as FrontPage to
publish their content, so if you can't click on something then you can't
    have it.

That helps a bit, thanks, but I'm still confused.

I'm assuming 'penguin-powered' is Linux and 'BillyBox' is MS?

All my website contains is (i) .html pages (ii) some photo's and (iii)
some streaming RealAudio and MP3s. It's just a hobby site, written for
fun: I'm not running a business, and it doesn't have lots of traffic.
I write teh pages in some .html editor or other (not FrontPage) and
upload them to the space I have with my current host via CuteFTP. That
being the case, is there likely to be a practical difference between
Linux and MS hosting for me? My current hosting is Linux based, but I
didn't actively make that choice: it's just how it came.

If you reply, please assume almost total ignorance at this end: my
webpage is just one of sevearl hobbies; any expert knowledge I may
have lies elsewhere, in my job 🙂

    Thanks!

Right. For a simple static site there is essentially no difference. If
however you wanted to create a photo gallery then the best way to do that
is to have software on the host which creates thumbnails and index pages
    on-the-fly - the site I run at
    http://www.footprintsramblingclub.org.uk/album/index.cgi is a simple
    example running on Linux.

One other difference. MS filesystems are case insensitive; index.htm
Index.HTM and INDEX.HtM are all the same file. Linux however is
case-sensitive so those would be three different files. If your existing
site has filenames which differ only by case then moving it to MS would
give you some work to do. The issue is more important transferring the
other way, when it would be necessary to check that hyperlinks etc all had
    the correct case.

As you may know, Linux is a free, open source operating system. The ethical
issues probably depend on how you feel about M$. If given a choice between
the two, do you really want to give your money to a company that is using
Microsoft programs rather than Open Source software? Personally, all other
things being even I'd rather give my money to a business that thinks the
    way I do.

Also, I'm a fan of GNU/Linux. There's nothing mission critical on my site
but I prefer the idea of it running on a set of tools that I know to be
good as opposed to a platform that I consider to be designed by utter
    incompetents.

Technically, a site that is hosted on a Windows based platform may be able
to offer some special M$ proprietary features such as ASP or VB scripting.
These have the same sort of functionality as the universally supported open
source equivalents such as perl and PHP but are M$ only. People such as
myself would say that M$ has designed these system to encourage lock-in -
ie. if your site uses ASP, it's going to cause problems if you want to move
it to a Linux host in the future. A PHP based site will work on a Linux
    host or a M$ one.

You might find that registering a domain (10 pounds for two years) and
pointing it towards the free space that your ISP is adequate. However, with
hosting that supports server side scripts, you can add dynamic features
such as forums, galleries (with comments, user uploads etc) and a guest
book. I use a system called Post Nuke (which is a set of ready made PHP
scripts) which lets you set up a complete news site with bulletins etc but
TBH, it's probably more than I need. You can get smaller PHP scripts that
implement things like a gallery with comments. You 'include' them on a
    standard .html page.

That's pretty much what I do with my site. I just use a HTML editor,
upload the pages as usual and then use Post Nuke as a menu system to call
the pages. I am going to expand it in the future. I have already installed
the forum add on as a test. I am going to have a section with mp3 downloads
and people can post comments and ratings up. I'll probably use the front
page news bulletin more in the future.

Also, if you fall on hard times, financially, you could implement 'Saucy
PW's Site Of Sexy Fun'. Complete with forums, a members area, a shopping
cart system for racy videos and soiled walking gear it would be sure-fire
success. I for one would buy Peewiglet merchandise such as a miniature PW
action figure with detachable walking poles and 'realistic kung fu grip
    action'. Think about it.
